Cool CALL FOR SUBMISSONS: AO Compilation Series: Volume 8 (Parts 1, 2, and 3!)

The AO Compilation Series: Volume 8 (Parts 1, 2, and 3!)

Greetings and welcome! In 2017 we are changing it up a bit and offering not one, not two, but THREE parts to the annual AO Comp series. Instead of doing two big releases, we're going to have ONE submission call and 3 "parts" that will be lower in price and easier to digest in total length for the listener. Sounds like a good plan, right? Everything else will remain the same. Please see below for further details.

Ambient Online is most active user supported forum for ambient music in the universe. We simply ask our users ONCE a year to participate and create music for our “compilation albums” which have propelled the careers of many who have submitted. Will you participate and join the ranks of those before you? This is your chance!

    SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:

    1) Every member is allowed to participate.

    2) Each member may submit up to 2 tracks, individual as well as collaboration.

    3) Please limit your tracks to 12 minutes TRT (Total running time). We are narrowing down our focus and allowing all artists to be heard. Focus your ideas within that timeframe.

    4) Brand new, unreleased (this includes SoundCloud and bandcamp) tracks are preferred. We are developing an exclusive collection available only from Ambient Online.

    5) Tracks should be unmastered (leaving headroom between -3dB and -9dB). Mastering services will be provided.

    6) When submitting your track(s) please use .wav, .aif, or flac file format.

    9) Participants retain their rights to release submitted tracks in future - if you want to publish your submitted track some day somewhere, you can.

    10) No matter your experience level or studio size. We are a supportive and positive community and are here to share and exchange ideas.

TO SUBMIT YOUR TRACK: Upload it somewhere (Dropbox, Hightail, SoundCloud (private track), or WeTransfer) and send me (S1gns Of L1fe) the link.

    ---
    SUBMISSIONS DUE: May 1st, 2017!

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to send me a private message.

    Cheers,
    -S1gns

p.s. This is the MEGA THREAD for the next 3 months and BEYOND. Please use it to confirm your participation, offer yourself for collaboration with other users, or talk about anything else related to the compilation. Have fun and don't worry!

Sure, I would like to try to contribute to this.
It seems like a nice way to help support ambient online.
I will get to work and see if I can come up with something worthy
over the next couple of months.

Are the three parts going to be organized by some sort of theme or genre?

In the AO staff discussion this was brought up, but ultimately decided against dividing into genres.

Themes would probably have to be announced beforehand as the chance 80-100 submissions would fall into 3 thematic categories is unlikely.

S1gns can better address how they will be divided up as he will be doing the curating for each. I imagine some of it will be as mundane as keeping the 3 releases somewhat equal in running time. I also imagine with the diverse creations the community as a whole puts out, it may be that each ends up being representative of the community as a whole, rather than segmented.

My personal challenge for this series is to limit myself to no more than 3 minutes, maybe even try for 2. i recently did a piece for a compilation that was limited to 2 and it was exciting and very educational. I made it at 1:57, with a long fade.

I tend to organize the compilations in a stylistic way according to my own personal taste and experience for the listener. As I'm mastering each track, in my head I think 'this might go well here, or let's move this one next to this one' in an attempt to orchestrate the album for someone who is listening to it linearly, beginning to end.

I'll do the same thing this time, but spread it over 3 parts. Each part will be a complete album of itself...no need to tie them together when it's all said and done (but you can if you want to!)

Appreciate the positive feedback so far. A bunch of people read the email and a few submissions have already trickled in...

    We're rolling!!

Is that 12 minutes total between the two tracks, or up to 12 minutes each?
I hope to get two done for this one.

That's a good question. 12 minutes for EACH track felt like the right number. That's cutting the previous limit in half, which still doesn't even come close to the 30+ minute pieces we've had in the past.

Narrowing our focus, showcasing everyone equally...that's the mantra for the compilation this year.

It's like Soundcloud; 12 minutes total, lifetime. Once you start going over we delete submissions from previous releases.

    Boy howdy! I'm in!

I'm not sure which way my pieces will go, but I'll throw a bunch of ideas at the wall and see what sticks. Should be fun!

Are there AO pro accounts available???

However: 12 minutes per track should be fine. The Petroglyph christmas comp contributions were once limited to 5 minutes, this is definitely too short, so they extended that to 10 minutes two years ago. And that is fine.

Won't miss this one. In fact, I already got something worked out over the last couple days. Check the dropbox.

I like the slight spin on the rules and change for this release too. Keeps things a little more interesting...

I hope to make something for this one - maybe even with some beats!

(i think it was the last AO compilation or the one before where I was convinced that beats and ambient could go together)

Funnily enough writing this reminded me of a completely forgotten by me piece I wrote (actual score) for 3 mallet players. It was to be played as slowly as they could stand - to reach about 8 hours maybe - in different locations in a cinema foyer. It was the first thing I wrote when I started a rapidly dropped music degree in about 1988. My composition teacher thought it was crap He was a new complexity kind of guy and not at all open to the value of anything other than what he did. What a hopeless attitude for anyone, let alone a teacher!

I might try to do the opposite, as my previous contributions to the compilations have been under 5 minutes (the non-collaborative ones at least). Not that doing a longer ambient piece constitutes anything that can be called a "challenge" though...ehm...!

Great! I also think it is a good decision to make the releases somewhat shorter. Will the different parts be released throughout the year, or are they planned on a shorter timespan?

Either way, I would love to be part of this again! And since this is a community project, I am available for collaborations. I tend to move more into dark ambient, mictrotonal, abstract, and noise areas. If you think there is some overlap with what you want to do, feel free to contact me!

I'm definitely in, and will be contributing stuff composed on some brand new gear I'm in the process of obtaining!
