  • the experience of (not) making a deal with a label

I've contacted some label for a release, (on phisical), boss label proposed this deal :
I have to pay shipping (from Europe to South America, thats its some numbers to think twice to spend in my local money) for 6 copies of other releases from his label and he will take my files for "his private collection" ( he didnt say he will release it, but instead told me this)

I said no, cause Im focused on my own music , so not interested on other musics in that way of trading.

So I propose another deal : he make the release of my album and I will pay shipping for some artists copies, this is copies of my own album.

He take it very bad, told me about his label its in red numbers due to artists doesnt want to do any serious job to support labels and so and so.

I repeat to him my proposal with respectfull words, as good manners indicates, avoiding any harsh expressions or misunderstood due to both of us doesnt have english as first language.

No more replies from him. I gues its done. Deal with it, I have no problem.

But some thoughts are floating in my mind : You make the music, you dont ask for money of sellings , you offer to pay shipping for your own artists copies but still you are not willing to support labels work?

I understand its very difficult to small labels to operate in the peripherials of mid and big ones, but seriously , wtf homie.

I known bandcamp, selling by me my own stuff , but I want to read your experiencies with phisical editions as artists and also from labels owners if there are boss labels here.

Some years ago I release 2 albums with 2 different labels, no problems at all. Free artists copies, not money for the sells but there you go.

I don't know, I can't make sense of it, heads or tails. The english is pretty bad.

      Oooook, here we go again:

The owner of the label offered to send me records from his catalogue in exchange for my tracks (by the way, he never said he would release them).
I would pay for the shipping.
My answer was that I want copies of my own released album, and that I would pay for shipping.
That is, I would pay for the shipping of the copies that I am entitled to as an artist and that are usually sent free of charge as a courtesy between artist and label. That way I support his label by paying for the shipping of my own copies.
The owner of the label didn't take kindly argumenting that musicians don't want to work and think they deserve everything for free (?)

      That's all.

Think I'd be looking for a different label, TBH.
