  • Bedroom Cassette Masters 1980-89 Volume Two: Call for submissions!

I have volume one and it is pretty cool. See the link above for the details on how your 80's or 80's inspired music can be part of this compilation.

Bedroom Cassette Masters 1980-89 Volume Two: Call for submissions!
"1) Produced music in the period 1980-89 with synths, keyboards, drum machines (vocals/percussion/stylophones optional) - absolutely no guitars!Or:
    2) Produced music imagined in the style of the above*

This looks interesting. I can offer some authentic material actually recorded with said location, said instruments and with said timeframe. The only problem is that the masters are sitting on my pcm tapes and the machine is currently not functioning! Maybe I can submit a cassette master instead... which I suppose might be kind of appropriate. Back then I still had my Sequential stuff and my MKS80 as well as a couple TX racks, etc.

A couple years ago I actually released an album of material originally recorded in the early 90s. Maybe I'll post a couple of those tracks on my Soundcloud just for fun. But this project would be going back even further.

That's really cool that you have recordings from the way back days. BTW - Volume One was pretty great. If you're interested, Check to see if the downloads are still available. If not, let me know and I'll post them in my Dropbox.

        Awesome, thanks!!!

I think it's amazing what all of us "little guys" are doing, which is why all these places like soundcloud and bandcamp are so cool! Why this forum is SO COOL!!! So much amazing music out there!

Yeah, around that time I was in several bands and we usually kept the tapes running during our rehearsals so I have (or had, actually) a ton of material. Most of it is on cassette because that's all we had back then and most of it was really bad to be honest! But occasionally we would come up with something hinting at towards decent. That part was like playing golf... we generally totally stunk (!) but then occasionally we would come up with something that really got us excited and that made us want to keep playing.

Back in the early 80's I was hanging with some guys and we used to record all sorts of soundscapes indoors, outdoors, noise, and overall pretty experimental and like you some of the recordings were accidentally pretty good. At least that's what I remember. Mine were also on cassette but my collection got ripped off and we lost that history.

The nice part of the story is that I'm now back playing (singing) with some of them in my pseudo punk cover band for the past few years. Really nice guys and its great to hang out with them on a regular basis. Nice how things go sometime! We have a show coming up in a few weeks where my guitarist get's his turn to showcase some of his songs and I've jamming with the band on my iPad. If I can keep up with the guys I may even play it in public. Little bit of a learning curve on music theory etc.

            No guitars? Phooey...

I've probably still got some recordings floating around from the late 80s when I thought having a guitar, a portastudio and no music theory at all would be enough for the sonic youth/pavement crossover I envisioned... I was wrong.

May have some very primitive synth/drum machine tracks too though they may have been from the early 90s, can't remember.
Latest release: never to be repeated

So I sent the organizer a few of tracks to check them out and he replied that they were not lo-fi enough and too processed (which is totally fair).

So took another crack at it. Here is my lo-fi single by my fake band. I was trying to channel early Cabaret Voltaire. I have set the track private in case my submission is accepted but wanted to share it with you guys. Enjoy!

A quick update. My submission was accepted and I'll be part of the next compilation coming out soon. Pretty excited even though the track is not representative of my current work. Quoting from the organizer it is "true to the aesthetic of BCM".

I have written a fake bio and made a fake single cover as well.

                      Congratulations on getting accepted.

Crazy! I just dug up a tape of old 80's stuff I did a week or two ago. Back in the late 80's and early 90's we had the USENET Tapes going. Kinda neat to see this coming back around.

Thanks for the link. I had no idea about USENET Tapes. I'll have to spend some time checking the tracks out.
The funny thing is that back in the 80's we also used to make songs kind of like this one.

I'd be down with participating in something like this. Perhaps they'll do a Vol. 3 at some point down the road.

Based on the large volume of submissions , I think there is a good chance that there will be a Vol. 3. If it happens, I'll share the info.
