I know the subject sounds kinky but given my thoughts here on the stupid cost of a minimoog http://www.ambientonline.org/forum/s...odel-D-reissue

Imagine you had £3500/$3500 to spend on anything for ambient, hardware or software, what would you go for?

Seven Korg Minilogues? Would certainly be more fun than a monophonic Moog?
    Full PC/DAW/VST setup?
Massive modular of your own creation?

Aww, I thought it was going to be a Cosplay thread (puts Thunderbirds Scott Tracy outfit back in the trunk...)

I'd try and spread the money between

    1) decent laptop (assume I can still use my existing software, don't have to buy it again?)
    2) a better guitar (nothing fancy, maybe a squier jazzmaster ~£300) and a few pedals (ha...)
    3) don't want a serious modular system but a few 'fun' boxes to play with would be cool (voltas etc).
    4) boring-ish ancillary stuff; controller keyboard, maybe with CV for the fun boxes, little mixer for the boxes...

    5) maybe most importantly, better headphones (AKG 702s or equivalent).

Really can't think of any software I'm desperate for, maybe a full license of Ableton for the audio-to-midi...

a treated room and top-of-the-line monitors. i'm always paranoid that there are problems i don't hear in my mixes with my current setup (laptop, scarlett 2i2 interface with relatively cheapish headphones that weren't designed for mixing) and i feel like even in spite of how much i reference stuff there's still gonna be systems i don't have access to that my work sounds bad on...

i don't really need any more gear other than that. actually, i need less gear; i've gotta go through my vsts list and delete a bunch of freeware that's now obsoleted by stuff i paid for. i suppose if money wasn't an object i would get valhalla shimmer, but $50 for what's essentially a pitch wheel for reverb effects i can otherwise already create is a big turn-off.

GaryG's list looks about like mine, right down to the model of guitar. Minus the Laptop. Any sort of mobile computing is bad manners and offends the Gods of Sedentary.

I always wanted to get into Cosplay but hate dressing up, so instead I had someone create a character that is identical to me. Now everyday is cosplay day.

          I'm thinking:

          - an Eigenharp Tau, which would take up over half of that budget (while the Eigenharp Alpha would be over the budget...)

          - and a portable PC: mini-ITX with i7, as a dedicated music making box, with a large touchscreen

blimey, some cool ideas going on. Just goes to show everyone is different but I still couldn't justify the price of a Minimoog just for the nostalgia and 'sound'. For the latter are Moog telling anyone who has bought anything else of theirs that they shouldn't have bothered? And if it's the sound you're after why restrict it in a reproduced case and limited keyboard.

A PC setup is far better for creativity.

And all the above before considering places like ebay etc

My music PC is a refurb from HP. That meant I could put in a decent soundcard and over time replace all drives with SSD. Added a new monitor as well so it runs two of them.
Guitars, all bar two were purchased second user. Monitors I bought last year were off ebay. I wouldn't have considered them full price!

New is exciting, but two times the gear second hand is even more awesome.:highfive:
