  • I fancy going to see some live ambient music...

I googled "live ambient music" the other day in an effort to see if there were any ambient style gigs on reasonably close to where I live. I don't mind travelling for an hour, but no further than that.

    Drew a blank.

There was an ambient festival sort of event up in Hull earlier in the year.

In that search I stumbled upon an artist called Bing Satellites and according to his web page he plays live sets. And he is based in Manchester, half an hour up the motorway from me, so I e-mailed him to see if he was doing anything local. This was his reply:-

"As for gigs, there is a distinct lack of ambient gigs around here. I am toying with the idea of starting something. It won't be for a while though. If it happens, I'll be publicising it a lot."

Shame really... I was hoping to get an idea of what it takes to play a live ambient set, and where these gigs are being played.

Looks like I will have to wait until next year now and perhaps travel a bit further afield...

    cheers

I've no idea if this is close to you, but check out http://www.awakenings-em.co.uk/

And Bing Satellites (Brin) performs some of the best live ambient music out there. Check out his Twilight Sessions series, which is all live music.
My personal favourite is Maple Leaf from volume 6.

A long time Bing Satellites fan here. Unfortunately I am a long way away and can't make it to any live ambient shows. They don't happen in my part of the world [extremely rare].

I have been to live ambient events. Modulator ESP runs some called The Church of Sound monthly in Nottingham (except for August and December).
You get quite varied local acts there, not all of them strictly ambient all of the time though. I have met some interesting folks who will happily talk through their set-ups with you. Nottingham is very well connected, it is the Queen of the Midlands after all, and my proud homeland. Well worth contacting Jez (Modulator ESP), because he goes to events all over the country/world very frequently.

I am sure there are dedicated audiences all around the country though; you just need to know where to look, stray off the well-lit paths of commercialism and delve underground where the radio monkeys dare not tread.

        Videos from my visits.

Yeah, my google search pulled up that one. It's about an hour and twenty minutes away, with no traffic jams and what have you. So not a million miles away... I think it's the drive back that is a bit off-putting.

There is an event this Saturday evening but I don't think I'd be able to make it anyway. Then that seems to be it for 2016.

Yeah, I need to check out more of Brin's work, for sure. Just a struggle finding the time. I suppose I could be listening to some of his stuff now but I was drawn to your SC page and I'm currently enjoying Brave the Future :D

              Hi Anthony,

Thanks for the heads up on Church of Sound. And the link to Modulator ESP, I'll drop him a line

              Great videos

Any trips down to Nottingham will be an overnighter, for sure. So that'll need a bit more planning with my missus...

              cheers,

I think with ambient music being such a niche genre, that you might find experimental music nights that have some ambient acts, mixed in with other stuff. I found out about one that runs near me that Im going to try to go along to (although the next one is on Saturday and I'm away). I've applied to play at it, so fingers crossed I might get my first live gig in 7 and a half years soon.

Heh thanks. I suppose I should upload some newer tracks there.

                    Hi Iain,

That reminds me of a gig I went to some time ago. My wife and I are big Porcupine Tree fans. Steve Wilson (of Porcupine Tree) is a big fan of Robert Fripp and has worked with him on a few projects. At this particular gig, Wilson got Fripp to warm up. I didn't know prior to the gig, so once I realised what was going on I was so made up.

His set, to be frank, was totally spoiled by the complete ignorance of the majority of the crowd. Actually upset me at the time and it made me wonder at the wisdom of setting up an artist to play to an audience which may not be familiar with their work, or even the style.

That is excellent news. I really wish you well. What are you doing to prepare and what sort of stuff will you be playing? One of the reasons I am trying to get to some "ambient" gigs is I would love to play at one. But I am pretty certain that, without my laptop, I will not be able to play what I produce and upload to SoundCloud. I think I may even have to consider dropping my synkrotron moniker because it would be so different to my currently published stuff.

                    cheers

Here's some more live experimental and ambient music, from the heart of Lincoln. Sharing this because I attended and it was particularly good. Highlights include the Grey Frequency performance and Peter K Rollings singing Superboys of Lincolnshire.

I'm glad there are opportunities near you. If I wanted to see some ambient music played near here, I'd have to play in front of a mirror! nonono:

Actually in in the last 2-3 years, while we still lived in the city, I've missed a couple of good shows...a Robert Rich living room concert near Denver, and there was a concert in Palmer Lake featuring Loscil and A Winged Victory For The Sullen. That one was only about fifteen minutes from our house. I didn't hear of it until the day after though. :>(

+1 on Bing Satellites! He performs on Electro-music.com streaming events as does Jez (Modulator ESP). I've done a few and plan on doing more this year. Does AO have a streaming station? Maybe, since finding shows local can be problematic, AO could have streaming events?

Some media students came by Weird Garden last year, and they made a nice documentary. I even pop up in the video for a few seconds.
