  • YouTube and Ambient Music Video

I actually began my Ambient Music Career on YouTube rather than an indie audio portal.

I'd like to open a discussion on how much of a boost a YouTube presence can give an Ambient Musician. I'm sure many forum members also have YouTube channels; here is your chance to speak on the value of YouTube to your music publishing, and whether the recent rule changes have had an impact on your viewer reach. I'd also like to know if any of you who do have YouTube channels may be getting hit by the new "not suitable for most advertisers" designation which removes 98% of ads from your video and basically reduces you to nothing but YouTube Red revenue share.

I just had this happen to my latest video upload, which is an Ambient Instrumental with no lyrics, and a custom composite video clip base created from four separate stock clips layered with transparency. See if you can figure out why this happened, as I certainly can't! Video linked at the bottom of this post.

Note: I've submitted this video for manual review; but it isn't eligible as yet. With this new designation, has come a criteria that in order to be reviewed, the video in question must have received 1000 views in the prior 7 days. Since I am still a small channel (5507 subscribers as of this morning), it's likely this video will remain in its current nearly non-monetized state for a very long time.

I've seen a lot of Youtubers complain about this. And there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it.

Indeed! This is the first time it has happened on this channel, however. Do you have a YouTube channel by any chance? If so has it been of any real value to you as a musician?

I just presume most of the designations are some automated algorithm that's never actually seen by human eyes, and if there are by any chance human eyes involved it's probably outsourced to some other company, like every other major social network is doing.

I can see how this particular vid might get flagged by some algorithm designed to catch flashy gifs or something, but the algorithms can only be so smart. And advertising models are pretty s*** anyways to begin with.

If flashy gifs weren't advertiser friendly, yes I could see that too.

The problem is these are not gifs. This is a four layer stock footage composite, and I have no idea what is "non-advertiser-friendly" about such a visual. I agree that advertising models are what you say also. Well we'll just have to wait and see what happens. At least I will get YouTube Red revenue; until YouTube decides to retire that service as well.

Just throwing out a wild guess: maybe ambient music doesn't have much of a demographic or target group, so nothing really fits as far as ads.

Most people who listen to my stuff are artists themselves, so music gear/software would fit, but I am guessing the algo doesn't know that.

By flashy gifs I mean the epilepsy seizure inducing stuff, not the flashing banner ads specifically. It's been a problem on twitter and elsewhere with known epilepsy sufferers being targeted with embedded images, my hunch is that the hypnotic animations in the video *might* be enough to trip flags in some automated algorithm on google's end.

I haven't put the time in to learn video editing yet. I have some ideas, but I hardly have enough time and energy to produce music...

Today I came across this: https://i.redd.it/6vtauit1s6qz.png
                It's mind-boggling, really.

Unfortunately, that particular policy has been in place since at least 2015. My husband once created an audio hypnotherapy session for relief of grief; and YouTube did the same thing with it when he told me to put in its description that the video was dedicated to the survivors and families affected by certain world tragedies.

YouTube is now regularly shooting itself in its collective feet; and I wouldn't be surprised if one of these things happens soon.

A: The site is put up for sale as non-profitable

B: User generated content posting is ended in favour of media produced by the major broadcast networks of the world

Hi my friend! Great to see you on a thread I started.

It definitely isn't that. Have a look at the search linked below.

                    https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...ic&sp=EgIQAlAU

That is an ambient channel search. The channels have for the most part, a high subscriber rate, and the majority of them have ads attached to their videos. I myself have well over 150 ambient music videos on my own channel, and this is the first time one has been found to be "Not suitable for most advertisers". YouTube has even auto-generated channels for three of my content types. They will most likely take their time populating them; but the fact they even existed startled me. One (first on list) is obviously a CDBaby ordered setup.

I think they're pretty openly aiming for B, for long term. (they won't end user generated content completely but it'll get 2nd class status at best, realistically they know most of their eyeballs won't go elsewhere) Google doesn't really need YT to be profitable in any case, they get tons of other income from elsewhere, gov contracts included, they can easily be counted among the 'too big to fail' in the tech world.
