The first time I heard Bohemian Rhapsody, I thought "what the hell is that?". I was already a fan of Queen, so I knew it was them. I just thought that this couldn't possibly be a single. There was just too much going on. What did I know? After 3 or 4 listens, I fell in love with it, and it's still my favourite Queen track. It's a condensed summation of everything that was good about the band.
Great King Rat is probably no. 2 on my list. Brian May was awesome.
I have to say "The show must go on". Not the most classic Queentrack, and a bit late in their carriere, but the lyrics and the simplicity of the chords, and the sad atmosphere speaks to me.
i love "Bijou" from the Innuendo album, i guess that whole album holds some sad memories for me, my grandad, who basically raised me, ddied in april of 1991 and then freddie in november, so overall its the one queen album i dont listen to as much
Freddie Mercury first met David Bowie in the summer of 1970, when he was trying to sell Bowie a pair of suede boots. Mercury co-managed a stall in Kensington Market, with Roger Taylor, and while Bowie tried on the footwear, Mercury quizzed him about the music business.
Quite spooky in a way, Mercury could certainly soar...
I hope you do not mind me modifying the format, but here are my 2 fav tracks off my 3 fav albums;
A Day at the races Long Away
Drowse
A Night at the Opera '39
I'm in Love with My Car
News of the World It's Late
All Dead, All Dead
Interesting that you picked so many with someone other than Freddie singing.
Hard to pick out just one myself too, so I'll pick one from each album (will leave a few albums out):
Queen - Doing All Right
Queen II - White Queen (so hard to pick just one from this fantastic album)
Sheer Heart Attack - Tenement Funster (I love Roger's songs on every album but this one is great - just edges ahead of Killer Queen for me)
A Night at the Opera - 39
A Day at the Races - Somebody to Love
News of the World - Spread Your Wings
Jazz - Fat Bottomed Girls
Live Killers - Tie Your Mother Down (far better than the studio version)
The Game - Play the Game
Hot Space - Dancer (despite the general dislike for this album I like most of the tracks on it and think that this one was Brian proving how versatile he is as a songwriter and performer)
The Works - Radio Ga Ga (never thought much of this album overall, to me it was a dip in form)
A Kind of Magic - A Kind of Magic
The Miracle - The Invisible Man
Innuendo - Innuendo
Live at Wembley 86 - A Kind of Magic (I was there! I just remember this being a standout track with 4 huge inflatable band members floating out over the audience when they played this)
On Fire Live at the Bowl - We Will Rock You fast version
Queen Rock Montreal - Flash/The Hero (fantastic live version of these two songs put together)
