    Hi Peeps

I've been inspired to start an ambient piece and I'm hoping to have something finished soon.

In the meantime, I thought I'd post my latest works on my SoundCloud page. I hope you don't mind?

It has been my best received electronic tune so far, and I've been doing this for quite a long time now. I hope it fits into your non-ambient tastes

    cheers

At nearly 400 "plays" (yeah, I know... might just be a click on the link and then run for it LOL), this has been my most successful composition ever... In all time! haha!

Thanks to anyone who accidentally stumbled across M81 and stayed the distance :D

A very beautiful and uplifting track I just pushed it up to 399 plays teetering on the edge of 400 now!
      It's all an illusion.

        LOL! Thanks Sarah

I never thought this piece would get much notice to be honest, but peeps seemed to like it, even though it is pretty much the same all the way through. I use lots of sequences that come and go, some deliberately masking and getting masked, and there is lots of automation there too, which I think added some interest.

        Thanks again for listening :D

You already hit 400 so I won't bother listening

I had to "full-screen" my browser so I could find a gap big enough to squeeze in a comment on SC.

            Good work again

listened to the SC track and watched the video as well- I'm really quite impressed with this track!

So, did you use a filter in Adobe AfterEffects for the visuals?

If I'm not mistaken it looks like you applied this over a time-lapse video of the outdoors. I've been known to do this, since I have a videocam that will do time-lapse.

Great stuff! Hope to hear more in this vein!

Wow! Thank you very much! And thanks for taking time to listen to the SoundCloud track and watch the video, I really appreciate it.

At the time that I created this I was just getting into video production so I only had Windows Movie Maker at the time, so it is one of the effects/filters from that software. I thought it was a bit corny at first but it grew on me and I stuck with it.

                        Yes, indeed

I have a GoPro and it also does time lapse photography. I placed it on the ground in my back garden and pointed it at the sky.

Alas! Shortly after creating this piece, which took quite a while to write, I joined ambientonline and decided I'd like to have a go at creating ambient music. In a way, I actually found that working on ambient stuff freed up my creativity. I really struggle with complicated arrangements and I would get stuck on a particular project and drop it, half finished. This particular track was started back in 2014 and sat, untouched, for nearly a year. When I picked it up again I really went to town, adding more and more sequenced tracks and developing the arrangement a bit more.

I have tried to created projects like M81 since and I don't get very far.

I also have to be honest and admit that most of my composing issues arise from the fact that I am not formally trained in music and much of what I do is really quite simple, in terms of musical content. I tend to spend more time, lately, on effects rather that music.

                        Cheers, and thanks again,

                        andy :D

Well, I don't think there's really any set 'formula' for composing ambient or any other kind of music, for that matter. It's just a matter of finding a way to express what's on the inside- much the same as yourself, I am not trained formally in music. I don't sight read and barely interpret music notation from the one class I had in music theory in high school. Almost everything I compose is improvisational, where I just find a 'groove', practise it enough to get a basic handle on it, and then press 'record'. I know I like what I hear, but I can't force myself to create the same kind of pieces one after the other-I have to play whatever I'm feeling at the moment, and when I'm inspired it seems to work out better. If I don't feel musical, I can't sit down and even attempt to play, let alone record.
