  • Critical Mass (2013/2020 Remixes)

This track is originally from July 2010, but I only just got around to making it listenable (I hope).

The remix took 33 hours and was difficult for various reasons. I'm glad it's finished.

As stated on sc before, I like this a lot! - I like the impression of a continual increase in tension and a certain feel of inevitability...that fits so well with the title. To keep up that ark for 7 minutes is impressive. Only thing I thought about was maybe, instead of the -hm, lets call it melodic relief - at the end, another choice would have been to blow the whole thing up in an explosion of sound - but that would of course have meant a break with the aesthetics of the track & genre Simply captivated by the idea of "critical mass" in music.

What a great track. Listenable? Very much so in my opinion! I like the understated energy at the beginning and the way it builds and gets restated throughout.
Only dead fish go with the flow.

Thanks for listening and for the great comments, phoenstorm. I'm glad you liked this

I started the remix of this about 4 weeks ago. The original track didn't have that slow middle section. It was "full-on" all the way, but I wasn't really happy about the structure of the track as it stood then. The remix took a long time to sort out due to various problems encountered during the last month. In the end, I decided to leave the track as it now stands. Of course, I may revisit it next year ;)

          Yes! VERY listenable and enjoyable!

Some more energetic tracks seem to take forever for even three minutes to go by. This was interesting throughout and the time just flew by!

          Great job, Tim.

Thanks very much for the endorsement, Bruce. Really glad you liked it :D

There were times during the making of this where I didn't feel as though I'd be able to tie up the loose thematic ends in a satisfactory manner. It seemed to work itself out in the end.

I was just listening to this again and I have to say, that lead is smoking :D really powerful but to the point, without taking up too much space.

Thanks for commenting Mario. Glad you liked that lead. the original version of this track had a much longer solo, which was totally OTT, so one of the first things I did during the remix was to cut it down to a reasonable size. This, in turn changed the shape of the track and led to the addition of the slow middle section. Cause and effect, etc. That lead was made using Pro-53. Glad you liked it

Here is the 2020 Critical Mass remix. There are some EQ changes. I fixed a broken kick, and the levelling has changed in line with my more "modern" approach. Slightly louder overall than the original, and with a slightly lower dynamic range, but not into "squashed" territory.

                    I hope you enjoy it

Great track! Enjoying the 'experimental' 80's retro vibe of this track. That lead synth background melody reminds me of something I've heard in the 80's, and the sequences are out of this world! Is this downloadable?

A lot of people think that my tracks have an 80's sound, although I preferred 70's stuff, as I grew up listening to Prog rock. Maybe it's a Depeche Mode influence (they were my favourite band from the 1980s).

Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks very much for listening

Downloads are enabled (320Kbps MP3) from the 2013 track in the first post of this thread. The differences between the two versions are minimal (slightly different EQ, levelling and mastering).
