    And so it begins...

I was inspired by Sonic Bodhi 's latest EP to have another go at MB3D.

As usual, these things can be very time consuming as you try to get to grips with the tons of buttons and sliders, lighting and colours. It's a menace.

I managed to generate a couple of images but don't really have anything to share yet.

As with Chaotica, I'd rather start with a clean slate and develop something I can call my own, but I don't thing it is going to be possible with MB3D. Not yet, anyway. So I have to use the presets and then tweak away.

At least I've gotten a bit further than last time.....

Okay, been having a play... So much to explore!

I started messing with one particularly simple formula, Menger4, which is basically a box shape. At first I tried zooming right in and that was interesting enough.

But then I zoomed right back out again and thought it would look interesting as just a simple box.

At first I was going to see if I could get this box hanging in the sky somehow and that was when I noticed that you can bring in background image.

I dug out a photograph that I took looking out of an aeroplane window. I'm sure a lot of people have taken this kind of shot haha!

So now I have a box floating above the clouds and I thought it looked like some kind of strange anomaly, a little bit like that black monolith from Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey.

I brought the resulting image into Affinity Designer and assembled this final image:-

So an idea for a future album

I have updated my Anomaly image above so that the light source is now above the clouds... Better than the first attempt but I'm still not 100 percent happy.

Main reason being, I find it rather difficult to determine the direction of the Sun in the photograph of the clouds.

It would be great to get the two to match as much as possible...

Your floating "puzzle box" Anomaly cover looks great. Mixing the real and unreal is often very effective.

                Thank you Benedict

I still have some reservations but I think it is the best I can do with my skills.

I've looked hard at the clouds picture I took from an aeroplane window a couple of years ago and I am unable to work out where the sun is.

And, because of the angle of the photograph, which is slightly down, and the fact that I want the box bang in the centre so that I can have it surrounded by the "synkrotron" text it gives the impression that the box is relatively close and therefore small. Or, at least not as big as I wanted it to appear.

                cheers

I think you are worrying over nothing. Lighting is already consistent enough with clouds behind. Besides this is a Anomaly, so it is odd. If I saw this on Bandcamp, I would notice it and assume the music my be of interest to me. Job done.

Here's one I did using Mandelbulber.

Floating World 2020 was a non-album track written after the Gardens of Merging Waters sessions. I blurked some maths, lucked on an angry sumo samurai, and did a flythrough (a bit too literally in a few cases) to see how it happened. Rendering took days (or overnights).

If there is a next time I will know to put a looooot more than 100 frames between keyframes. Knowing how to be far more aware of where I am would help a lot as I was often lost which comes off as those ghastly turns. Control of background, or remove to export as alpha, would be nice too.

                    :-)

Yes, I know what you mean.

Many years ago I was actually attracted to Yes initially because of the Roger Dean artwork... It really stood out and spoke to me at that time of my life

                      cheers

                        Good stuff

I mean, I really enjoyed the accompanying music and the graphics was enjoyable too, but I could see what you were on about when your said "those ghastly turns."

Do you think you will ever be tempted to go back and try that again, with a different set of parameters perhaps?

I have not even considered animations with this thing yet... I find the 2D stuff taxing enough for now

                        cheers

                          Thanks Mr O Tron

Will I go fractal again? Part of me would like to but part of me is like, what a PITA workflow for results that will be just as ignored as any other process I use. Sure I can do better next time but... Fractal does get a few viewers who like fractals for their instant trippiness but I bet I don't see even an extra couple of views of my Bandcamp. The render time alone is certainly off-putting if I were to think of making a whole album that way. The 48 min "Voice Of Space" Blender animation took less time to render than this 2 mins! (render played at half speed) Bottom line, too early to say.

For now, I am working on other things and coming back into music for a game I am scoring so I don't have to worry about making visuals for that as it is already done.
