I see a lot of people on there and plenty of posts from John at Relaxed Machinery (who's migrating the whole RM community over to Ello) but not a lot else.

I believe it has Bandcamp integration now so maybe worth another go?

Me neither. As Codehead says, it's really Twitter on steroids, just haven't figured out how groups and stuff really works. Maybe I'm just stuck in my ways and prefer everything nicely compartmentalised, like on a forum such as this.

i tried Ello due to Relaxed Machinery migrating there. I like the minimalist design, but I do also miss the compartmentalizations when trying to find things. They are adding more all the time though, so in time more familiar functions may show up. Ello just added a "Love" function - it's like "following" or "favoriting" so you will be able to more easily find those posts that you tag with the "Love" function. Definitely does have Bandcamp embedding now too!

I think it may work well for randomly discovering new people/artists, but as far as considering it as a replacement for a focused community such as RM was, for me it fails.

Since a majority of John's account (elloambient) is reposting other's posts (almost all of my friends list appear on his list as well), I was getting the same posts repeated, and things were getting buried fairly quickly when he'd go to catch up (a dozen or more reposts in a day).

I am not afraid of new tech, as I have been building my own computers, playing with electronics, and working in online communities for years--I just don't do twitter/instagram things and prefer a forum/blog-based type of communal interaction. The capability of posts meant as passing thoughts having as much visibility as the more engaging and informative ones just adds noise I don't want to sift through. I have a limited 'Aovi-ontol" facebook, and that's as far as social media (i even find the term irritating) goes with me.

So for me ello was a bust, and I let my account go a few weeks back.

it's slowly getting better. i'm still waiting on "private groups" to come along which should (crossing fingers) be more intimate like here or like the old rM ning was. It's far from perfect, but I love it.

I started focusing ello ambient on summaries instead of reposts... although on days i'm super busy or vacation i still repost.

there are a ton of pros and cons to every platform. it's why i point people here and hypnos ... forums can be awesome.


check in at ello ambient now and then and dont kill off your ello account... it'll keep improving.

I am pleased ello seems to be working out for a majority of people, and I hope people read my comments as just my unique experience and not as dissuading someone from checking ello out. Many of the same wonderful people are all involved as was at RM, here, and other places--so it's a great group no matter the format. Getting into a community early in its development can be exciting--I'd encourage anyone to go and see what ello has to offer.
