I came across this article today, about repetition in music. It makes interesting reading. It's not about ambient per se, but does have some interesting info about how our brains respond to musical repetition. The two short sound clips are really interesting!

I would like to see more science inquiries into the repetition of sound in inducing non-ordinary states of consciousness or group consciousness. An example would be the Sufi branch of Islam, which dances themselves into a trance accompanied by fast paced drum music.
