Perhaps a space to collect all kinds of things ambient would be a cool idea. I am thinking about articles, perhaps podcasts and so on. If everybody contributes we could come up with a resource, a link-list, or a catalogue so to speak. Certainly, there's all kinds of ways something like that could be implemented. For the time being, we could collect in this thread. I stumbled across this: Joshua Rothman, The Discreet Charm of Ambient Music Nothing too special, but a good read. Probably I was simply charmed by the strange conjunction of The New Yorker and Ambient music

As you said, nothing too special, but a good read. I see he has discovered the Buddha Machine. Now available in juicy day-glo colors! These can be an awful lot of fun especially if you get three or four of them. For a while they were kind of hard to get a hold of. There are some "ambient" Apps for iPad as well...

      Good idea.

I'd like to make a link list at the top of the page for something like this.

Something I also want is to have site-sponsored interviews, but I'm a horrible interviewer. :(

Maybe question submissions from forum members.

Some of this applies to Ambient, but it's just a good article for getting the most out of your music:

A huge list of electronic music tips for injecting any production with extra levels of excitement and energy.

That's a pretty good article! Some stuff I knew, some stuff I had kind of forgotten, and also a lot of things to think about.

Not sure I like the part about using reverb sparingly! Seriously... just kidding about that.

Also, a nice shout out to Simon's dad in item 40.

But wait, there's more... clicking in the "Electronic" article also took me to this topic, which is also interesting:

This Manifesto is actually a list of things I’ve been dwelling on and thinking about in various ways for the best part of a year. It began with asking the question, “What Is That Pro Sound, Really?” What Is That “Pro Sound”? “Hell, there are no rules here – we’re trying to accomplish something.” –ThomasRead More

This one is more ephemeral and takes a more Zen like approach but is equally cool. Talking more about the bigger picture. Sort of the Macro to the other article's Micro. Some very good points in here as well!

I just subscribed to that site. Looks like there's a lot of really good info there. I'm so glad you posted this, Dax!!!

If we could get something going on like the old Hyperreal archive, that would be amazing. Hasn't been updated since 2001!

There's also this, but looks like it hasn't been updated in a long time either:

That's essentially what I was trying to create with the link lists on the menu at the top of the page, but as has been pointed out to me, many people don't really look at the links in that format, so I'm thinking I may reformat into something a little more user-friendly and perhaps a little more obvious.

Thanks for pointing those out! I'll go through the lists and see if there's anything useful in them anymore. I'm sure a lot of those sites are dead and gone by now. :(

it'll be interesting to see where this is going...

"Feel guilty when making ambient music?"

I feel so dirty when I make big, spacey ambient music. I can usually crank out a relatively complex pad sound and let that play out for a 1:30 and call

I hope links to other forums are safe here...doing the reverse on that other forum linked above would probably result in an "infraction" handed to you ;)
