What are your thoughts? personally i'm quite the fan of downtempo/chillout stuff but in the opinion of the more experienced folks around here, is it really ambient? i've been listening to some of the drone type stuff and its about a million light years away from glow sticks at glastonbury, not saying its bad, far from it, just very VERY different. So what is ambient music really?

I don't know. I do know I dislike the "chillout"-tag. I like a lot of what's been dubbed "downtempo" - but I would'nt necessarily call it "Ambient Dance Music". What about The Orb? Don't quite remember what they were labeled with, probably also a problem of which career stage you talk about...Some of the early Warp, Black Dog stuff to me sounds like it could be called Ambient Dance Music...or maybe there's only artists that do Ambient & Dance at the same time? As for downtempo, I guess my benchmark is still the 1997 "K&D Sessions". But that is also something I'm hardpressed to associate with glowsticks...there's a few other threads around discussing similar questions and it's good to question your categories...mind to post a few examples of what you had in mind?

I don't know where that borderline is either. I also like a lot of downtempo/chillout stuff ... been listening to guys like Blank and Jones lately. Maybe some of it is in the direction of what another thread called 'rhythmic ambient', but it certainly is a long way away from what we hear in the AO podcasts.

FSOL, Ozric Tentacles, Robert Fripp, The Orb. You can dance to them all. I speak with the benefit of dimly recalled memories of a misspent youth. You might attract some strange looks, but that is why sunglasses were invented :mrcool:
You can also dance to Opeth.

My two main influences that have shaped my music the way it is today. I have mentioned this in a couple interviews. I think when I create my music I subconsciously hear some of this music in my head which partially shapes my own. I won't say it's entirely derived from, but there is definitely a strong connection.
All hail The Orb's Adventures to the Ultraworld and FSOL's ISDN!

I think my favourite FSOL album is Lifeforms. The sounds on there are amazing. First time I heard it I was shellshocked. I bought it immediately, and 18 years later, I'm still amazed. Not quite so danceable as Accelerator with its lenticular case.
