  • How often do you stretch?

    I think every ambient artist does. It would be weird if they didn't stretch anything out to create a new sound from other things.
    So, do you fall back on it once in a while? Is it a staple? Why or why not?
    Then, do you prefer to 'preserve the pitch', or change it slightly..or manually grab and custom stretch..allowing the sound to sculpt according to milliseconds of difference to a tone you like?
    You have tons of control, and lots of ideas to add here, if you like -

    All of the above, whenever the mood takes me. I use Paulstretch in Audacity or the Z-Plane elastique in EnergyXT. After stretching I sometimes reverse the audio and overlay on top of the original. I often pitchshift to make chords. Offsetting the start of the resultant wav outputs is usually sufficient to generate interesting cyclic modulation effects. There is a set of FX in Audacity offereing further processing possibilities, and I have my FSU VSTs........and then along came The Mangle.

      Although I have played around with Paulstretch once or twice, I never have done stretching beyond slowing something down a very little.

        Ah, I see @ both.. that reminds me of something i do..I reverse audio then put it kind of back to back. Except, what I also like doing is this:I 'fade in', but then reverse, because with Edison, the fade out significantly pinches more off..so I reverse fade in the end segment, than flip back around. What I like to do is have the pinched parts sort of form a Vesica Piscis of audio between the two, overlapping to form a congruency that can't be detected - except for me who wrote out. that's kind of a cool stretch without touching the original structure you first came up with.

        Oh, and I might have to try and see what that Paulstretch is about

          Here is a track I made about a year ago with Paulstretch using all of the techniques mentioned above and a couple of others. One thing that I really like about these time-stretching techniques is that it allows you to be really "vague" about timings. All of the drones here came from the same single second of audio generated from a basic sawtooth bass synth patch.

            Is very beautiful! With my lasy album, I just tried stretching my own voice and way lowering the pitch with a reverb
            Always a good idea. I know what you mean because the voice I used was a snippet of me not really singing just so much as kind of humming with extyra volume. This is a great sound, btw

              I try and do about 20 minutes of yoga a day. Does that count?

                Only if your using an audio sample as a yoga accessory! Heh.

                I'll use Tracktions time-stretching off and on wheh loop-mangling, very few loops or samples escape without some kind of time-duration processing.

                  Quite often I start with few seconds long pad and I stretch it into few minutes long drone. I use PaulStretch and PhotoSounder.

                      True! At some certain point..you are even shrinking what was longer to begin with or that makes for a funny curve ball..if Space and Time are so entwined as to be nearly talked about as one 'n same, does simply changing the 'pitch' but not the duration count [Space] to pulling a bar or two maunually [Time]. just a funny thought. We are space explorers..we are audio astronaut engineers, absolutely.

                        i love doing that because I so often don't start with empty sound as a blank canvas..well, to some extent..really tho, I have an initial hum or very general first elongated drone as a type of 'palette cleanser', or like a painters first layer of gesso. Then, I feel my canvas is ready. When you stretch, in a way you are setting up the easel or construction the right canvas, imo. Some small and square or wall mural size, etc. Cool!
