  • City and Memory are looking for recordings.

    Hi,

I found this great website whilst floating about on the net. Cities and Memory offer and request sound recordings for a database of cultural sounds. Their latest released sound is that of a wind turbine, funny how I was talking about that in another thread a few days ago, anyway, check them out. They have a Facebook page too

Cities and Memory is a global collaborative sound art, sound map & field recording project - remixing the world, one sound at a time.

That's an interesting project - the notion of mapping both the real and the reinterpreted version of a place's sonic signature is intriguing. While the coordinator stats on the FAQ page that sounds can be provided to other artists for re-interpretation (i.e. someone other than the original recordist), the licensing model is unclear. The compilations of reworkings on BandCamp are (c), but I can't tell if the original recordings are (c) or some flavor of CC. I'll drop them a line and see what's up.

When I get time I think I'll drop him a sound or two - got quite a few field recordings now.

if you, or Ian, get any answers it would be good to know. I was in a bit of a hurry when I read through the site details so if either of you have time to check it out more thoroughly then that would be really cool. Thanks

Stuart (the project's founder, I presume) and I are having an email conversation about the workings of the project - particularly with respect to licensing of both the original recordings and of the derivative works. I've sent him several followup questions, as well as a link to this thread. Hopefully he'll drop by and join the talk (if he's not a forum member already - I have no idea). If not, I'll post an abstract of his responses once I feel I have enough information to share with you all.

That is great. Thanks nadaRobot, I did contact them via Twitter with the link for this forum.

I took at shore waves audio from that web site and did an Audio-To-MIDI with Melodyne, cleaned up the MIDI to a scale/key with Scale Suggestor and this is what I came up with...

plus there's MIDI generated from a software program I'm working on.
