  • Video Creation - Tips, Tricks and software

    Hi Peeps,

It was discussed elsewhere that we could do with somewhere to discuss all things related to the creation of videos that would accompany our music on youtube and the like.

So I thought I would kick off with re-posting GaryG's link to the Bedroom Producers Blog article about video creation/editing software:-

A list of the best freeware video editor programs for Windows, Mac OS an Linux, featuring HitFilm 3 Express, Blender, Lightworks and others.

There is some good stuff here, so please have a read.

As well as the usual non-linear video editing software, there are other tools mentioned there too.

I think this is a very useful topic. I've been putting video to my monthly mixes for the last year.

I use Vegas Pro which used to be Sony Vegas.

Ah! So you are one of our resident experts then? I look forward to your tricks and tips and some links to examples of your work

I have been busy playing today, although the end result was hardly worth it.

I wanted to try out that Sonic Candle, which is a simple (perhaps too simple) frequency spectrum bar thing.

I then took the output of that to see if I could make it a bit more interesting.

Personally, I think I failed and perhaps I should stick to making music, which is hard enough...

And, as simple as that looks, it took over an hour to render...

And doesn't youtube make a mess of your audio

20 years from now when bandwidth and processors are even bigger and faster there will be a plugin with a "Youtube" setting to dirty up your mixes like the 'old days'.

Here is my youtube channel Ancient Realms. I mainly use still photos with background video composited together. You can find tons of cool video on Vimeo that people have for free download. I also use loops from sites like motionloops. Haven't gotten to making my own effects yet. My spare time is on music production.

Here is the latest which is one still photo and a space loop for effects.

                Thanks Lorn,

I've sub'd to your channel and I will have a good look around to see what you are up to.

I think my major problem is learning the software...

Isn't that the challenge in all our online endeavors!

It is indeed, but I have enough trouble learning about all my music tools

+1 to everything Andy said! Especially the software. I'm approaching this video stuff on a budget, I have dl'ed Shotcut (Thanks again to GaryG for the link...I'd missed that thread at BPB!) and I'm working on sussing it out. It seems to have a higher geek coefficient than some other products, but the price is right and it will run on my old system! It has also steered me back to some existing software that I have never explored completely...for instance, creating text block png's in cf/x alpha that can be composited into the video, etc. I may even eventually create a video worth sharing!
Only dead fish go with the flow.

I totally appreciate not everyone has the budget to buy all the software and tools, etc. I've been blessed with the means, so I always attempt to support the talent behind the tools, whether software, artist, etc.

Very cool idea for a thread :tu: All I've dabbled with so far is the app that comes with a MacBook. The last thing I need is another diversion, but I do want to get a better handle on this.

I've just invested in the Sony Movie Studio Platinum software. Will be looking into it. Early days yet. Pleased we've got this thread going though. Good stuff here already and I think video is basically essential these days

Have also had a go with Sonic Candle. Not particularly adventurous but... kept it simple
