  • One Sample Challenge #67

Ok, OSD Challenge #67, sample courtesy of ablaut.

    https://soundcloud.com/ablaut/osd-67-sample/s-0EPzE

The idea of the contest is to create a track using only this one sample. Ambient tracks are nice but there's no rule defining the type of track.

    The rules are:

    1. Additional sounds (whether samples, soundfonts, synths, romplers etc) are not permitted. Instruments and samplers which allow the loading of samples are permitted (though only the contests sample or part of can be used of course). Any other processing of contest sample (including granular and resynthesis methods) is permitted.

    2. You can use as many copies or parts of the original sample as you want, each processed with respect to rule 1. This allows you to come up with heavily processed sounds, but still only tracing back to the original sample.

    3. This challenge is open for a month, it will end at midnight (UTC) on Sunday 1st December 2019.

    4. Submissions should be uploaded to a place available for all AO members. Links should be posted in the thread dedicated to the given round. Please, do not use hosting with countdown, captcha, and other obstacles.

    5. The sample is provided under CC0 (public domain) license.

    6. The winner of the contest is chosen by a vote open to all AO members. You can submit as many entries as you like but the winner will be the single entry with the most votes, votes for multiple submissions by an artists are not combined.

    7. The winner of contest chooses the sample for the next contest.

    8. Participants should disclose the formula for each track submission for the benefit of community.

    Good luck everybody!

Full sample into Iris2 for all voices. Backing percussive sounds reversed small cuts. Melodic content isolated and tuned.
Aether, Octavox, RP Delay, Ableton Ping Pong, Ableton EQ Eight and FabFilter Pro C2.

I put the sample in a granular sampler (Grain inside Reason) and dialed in a microtonal scale (73 cents for each semitone).
Then I improvised on my piano keyboard.
At last I added reverb and delay and reverb ...

Sonic Bodhi maybe... I'm the only one managing the challenges and got a bit fed up trying to keep on top of them. Maybe I could alternate them, I used to enjoy some of the image challenge entries as a contrast to the sample ones

That sounds like a good alternative. I liked the image challenge dares. One sample dare is good, too.

                          Finally got something: -

                          Main techniques:
                          1. Do extreme stretching and pitch-shifting in IrcamLab TS, and play an Amaj7 chord with the resulting sample in Loupe2;
                          2. Split the result of that into four frequency bands using ISOL8;
                          3. Top freq band: Short delay with loads of feedback and slow autopanning
Upper-mid freq band: 15 sec reverb
Lower-mid freq band: 50 sec reverb
Lowest freq band: Mono, no reverb

                              Hi folks!

                              https://soundcloud.com/id_23/borderdrift-osd67-01-id_23

                              ...
I first created one track of 6 minutes length using Borderlands Granular; This was created by recording the output of several grain clouds with varying parameters, which were animated over the original sample.
Then I took 4 instances of original sample inside AUM and played them at these rates:
                              0.593
                              0.128
                              0.247
                              0.498
These 4 tracks were subsequently fed into these effects:
                              Channel A
                              Dedalus
                              ApeDelay
                              GliderVerb
Spectrum Granular (an iOS MI clouds port)
                              Eventide MangledVerb/Blackhole
                              Channel B
                              ApeFilter
                              AudioDamage ADverb2 / Eos2
                              Poliverse Wider
                              Output
                              VirSyn Barkfilter
                              AudioDamage RoughRider2
This output was mixed down with the Borderlands output combined with further effects to create the final piece.

gonna give all the entries a listen tonight...
                              good luck to all!
