Title reflects my scramble to get this done by 23:59 UTC. ;) I did this with Ableton using Padshop and Live's Resonator. I automated resonator gain for each band and then ran the tracks trough Valhalla verb's and Fabfilter EQ. It could be better, but I'm just happy to get something submitted. Work and the Holidays have kept me buried the past few months.

You are perfectly right. And closing date was clarified in my thread opening post. 23:59 UTC.

I hate to start this again, but the end date needs clarification. 00:00 (midnight) is both the beginning of one day and the end of another, so their is ambiguity as to whether the contest ends 1 minute before 00:01 or 1 minute after 23:59 on the 14th. My original assumption was that it ended at the end of the day on the 14th.

I'll get my entry submitted either way, but I think the closing time should probably be 23:59 UTC which is the end of the day.

Okay, here's my entry: "Extrusion v0.60"

    http://soundcloud.com/remst8/extrusion-v0-60

Everything was done within Renoise. I pulled 4 samples from the original recording. Background sounds and drones are basically from a section of the drill/grinder sound, played a few octaves lower than recorded. The “breath” sound and all percussion are derived from one of the metallic clangs. The synth-type sounds are made from a tight loop from a section of background noise. I used the various native DSP effects built into Renoise for distortion, reverb, phaser, filtering, EQ, and numerous LFOs to automate several effects parameters.

I can make the .xrns file available if anyone would like to check it out and see the details.

Here's my entry! My apologies for being so absent from other contests...this one truly inspired me. :D

The melody was created using the sample inside of Live 9's "simpler" sampler. I narrowed in on a slice so small it created a waveform using the Matt Barlow technique. Added reverb, delay, filtered it and then froze the track. The problem with that is I don't actually own Live 9 (yet) so with export disabled, I had to drag out the waveform and move it back to DP8 for further arrangement. The other background textures were created by either stretching or reversing the sample and putting them inside Iris and Padshop Pro.

How fun was that! I really enjoyed this. Thank you Metadronos for the sample and for putting this contest on.

Just goes to show how awesome of a community we really have here. Keep it up gang!

    Cheers,
    -S1gns

This is my first attempt at software only sample manipulation. Used Audacity, Sonar, Iris, RP-Delay, Breverb2 and Aether. Approximately a dozen samples cut, stretch and equalized in Audacity. Ported to sonar for Iris, FX and fades.

    The Last One Out

This is my home and has been for over 400 Sol years. The only home I have ever known. I could hear the roaring of the ship engines as they prepped for departure. The last remaining inhabitants of a dying spaceport were boarding and as Captain I was determined to be the last. When the final member of my crew was evacuated, I closed the door, myself remaining on my ship. Frantic shouts and com calls echoed through the empty hallways. You could hear the pounding on the now bolted door, but I refused to leave. After what seemed like hours, they softened their pleas and offered me one last chance. I declined.

I took a short tour through my ship, ending at Arboretum Dome 17, where I reclined against my favorite Sycamore tree. As I closed my eyes in wistful thought, the engines of the ships engaged and one by one pulled away.

When the quiet came, I sent the command to extinguish the artificial sun ... and all was dark.

Thank you for your kind words, S1gns

You are right, my sample is good for work, you can take many different composition paths from it.
Some samples were really challenging to work with, like "winslowbreathes" sample.
I decided to provide friendly sample, rich in harmonics and even punchy fat "beats" ;)

I have a lot of heart for this challenge, so I hope such sample will result in large
    number of interesting submissions.

Good luck with challenge to all participants!
