  • One Sample Dare #14

Fresh recording specially for One Sample Dare Challenge 14.

Miniature condenser microphone was placed inside stethoscope tube,
and this "contact microphone" was mounted on old, long unused notebook.

Notebook was started, system was still in good shape. After system start I did few
point-and-click actions with touchpad, and finally I closed system, letting the whole machine to shut down.

    Bonus: short cellphone interference ;)

Hey everyone, we are currently experiencing some outages on the SoundCloud site. Our developers are working hard to fix this as soon as possible and roll out a deploy. We will be updating here as soon as we have more information about this.

We may need a new contest for "Most creative sample". This would definitely be a winner. ;) This sample has lots of possibilities. I may have to find time to enter this one.

Very cool sample! Reminds me of when I attached a contact mic to the subframe of my last car and recorded its last drive... Very similar sounds, too!

A short stretch of the original sample contained a kind of distant resonant buzzing I liked, so I focused in on this with some EQing and volume boost. I then stretched and pitchshifted it, copied it to four tracks with staggered starts and added tons of reverb on different settings, exporting some as WAVs and reimporting them to add even more. During this process a natural underlying rhythm became apparent, which with the reverb effect almost has an organ-like groove, so I made it central to the track.

Ok, so after 2 days of slaving over a hot DAW in just my skivvies, supplied with beer (of course!) I have taken the one sample and created.. yep.. another dark ambient piece out of it!

                      Welcome to Encysted:

                      https://soundcloud.com/synthetic_aurality/encysted

                      PRODUCTION NOTES

                      DAW: Tracktion 5.2.2!

Track One: Original sample pitch-shifted down an octave, time-stretched to 2x speed, and mangled beyond recognition with Audio Damage Ronin. Begins roughly 3/4 of the way through the composition.

Track Two: Original sample pitch-shifted down an octve, copied then the second copy reversed, hit with Audio Damage Automaton and Kombinant DVA. Runs about 4/5 0f the composition.

Track Three: Original sample, copied, then reversed. Molested using Camel Audio CamelSpace and Melda Productions MWobbler. Ambient dubstep, anyone?

Track Four: Original sample reversed, copied, and un-reversed. Processed with Melda Productions MMultibandGranulator, Kjaerhus Classic Delay, and Delay8.

Track Five: Original sample pitch-shifted down an octave. Mangled with Audio Damage Dubstation and Melda Productions MMultibandHarmonizer.

Master Buss: U-He Zebrify, Tone2 Akustix, and Voxengo Elephant 4.

Normalized and fade in/out in Sound Forge Studio 10.

The granulator and the harmonizer are key ingredients here. Since the sample wasn't as harmonically rich as I'd have liked, these two little toys did their magick and I got what I needed. Dubstation and Delay8 add a nice lingering trail, and Akustix was the final polish - set to stereo image widen, high density.

                      Enjoy!

Kudos to MetaDronos on the Sample. Lots of good building blocks in there. Here's my piece: Rural Road.

                            http://soundcloud.com/davedorgan/rural-road-ambient-online-one

There are eight tracks. Mostly done on an iPad and a bit with Audacity. I took a short segment from the sample, which was centered around the 14 second mark. There's a cool twang right there. Some tracks used the twang and others used the airy drone sound around it.

Track 1: The sound of an old truck going down a country road. Used csGrain to slow down the clip and applied LPF.
Track 2: Low whooping background sound. Brought in the sounds of frogs, dog panting and motion. iDensity into Turnado (trying this one out, but so far it's kind of annoying).
Tracks 3 & 4: Low airy drones (#3 has the scratching sounds). csGrain
Track 5: Not of this world presence. I took a clip from another part of the sample and ran it through csGrain.
Tracks 6,7,8: Cicadas, crickets, etc... That summer sound that you tend to tune out, but when you notice it you think, damn that's loud. A classic mother nature drone. Used the same main clip and in Audacity ran it through a bunch of stretch, reverb, shift up/down octaves, speed up etc. At some point I made two copies of the track and raised the pitch 6Hz on one and lowered it 6Hz on the other. The original and raised pitch were panned all the way left. The lowered pitch was panned all the way right.

Not particularly ambient but it was kind of fun to create.

Nothing mind blowing process wise; just little bits of the sample pitched and delayed or looped as necessary. 'Sampling' handled by Reapers Samplomatic5000. Delays used included rp-delay, twin delay and NastyDLA (retro dubby feedback sound). The RP-Amod freebie used for chorus, bass kicked into shape by P&M Clarisonix. Just realised, *NO* reverb used at all. Must be a first for this challenge. ;)
