  • One Sample Dare #17

Well, folks- I'm sorry I don't still have the original WAV for this anymore, but the quality is still decent- and I can't think of a better way to breathe some new life into an old field recording
than this! Can't wait to hear what's done with it.
Sunny Afternoon Window Ambience (Look for "Download" on the left-hand side.)
"Critics can’t stand these records, by and large, because in their search for eternal adolescence, they still want it all to be spunky and manic and witty."

    Challenge accepted!

After messing about with the sample last night, I sat down this morning and, in between phone calls and coffee, created:

      "Utevaloelta"

      Utevaloelta (OSD17)

      Tools: Akoff Composer, Mammut.
      Synths: DiscoDSP Vertigo.
      Effects: AmorphousBlob, AnarchyRhytms, AtomicReverb,
dfx Skidder, Glitchmachines Quadrant, GVST GGrain,
      RRadioAM, ValhallaRoom, Voxengo Pristine Space.

Layer 1: Original sample repeated, routed through FX chain:
      AmorphousBlob -> AnarchyRhytms -> AtomicReverb

Layer 2: Original sample strongly denoised, silent parts removed, stretched
in Mammut. Repeated and routed through GVST GGrain and ValhallaRoom.

Layer 3: Original sample strongly denoised, silent parts removed, stretched
in Mammut. Repeated and routed through FX chain:
Quadrant -> dfx Skidder -> RRadioAM -> ValhallaRoom.

Layer 4: Original sample strongly denoised, silent parts removed, then converted
to MIDI in Akoff Composer. Repeated MIDI version played by DiscoDSP Vertigo, with two sample
versions loaded: one strongly denoised with silent parts removed, and second denoised,
silent parts removed and finally stretched in Mammut.
Vertigo output routed through Voxengo Pristine Space, with sample version denoised
and with silent parts removed loaded as impulse response.

Hmmm, probably a good candidate for the "is this really ambient?" debate.

AO #17 On the street where you disassociate

I had no plan here. Started by creating the real-time Blue Cat tracks (see below), hated the result and went on to the granulation. Liked it, saw a way of further treating and multi-tracking the Blue Cat tracks and ‘inserting’ them (with considerable overlap) into the bisected granular track.

00:00 to 04:15 Sample granulated live in ambient v.3, double tracked. (1st section)
02:50 to 08:12 Sample through Blue Cat Chorus.
03:11 to 08:31 Sample through Blue Cat Chorus, reversed.
02:50 to 08:12 Sample through Blue Cat Chorus, reversed and mixed down.
02:50 to 08:12 Sample through Blue Cat Chorus, reversed & mixed down & ring modulated.
05:45 to 07:53 Heavy drone made from random sample.
09:48 to 11:56 Heavy drone made from random sample, treated, remixed and pitch altered
07:25 to 12:33 Sample granulated live in ambient v.3, double tracked. (2nd section)

          Long Down Hill

          https://soundcloud.com/davedorgan/long-down-hill-ambient-online-osd-17

Core sound 1 - First manipulated the entire sample in Audacity. Sped it up four times twice. Dropped it down two octaves. Stretched 100 times. I took the last five minutes of the track. Used Sliding Time Scale/Pitch Shift... to drop it one octave across the five minutes.
Core sound 2 - Still in Audacity, took core sound 1 and dropped it two octaves and applied Glitchmachines Fracture. This is the low pulsing sound.

Then moved sounds 1 and 2 to Renoise.
Track 1 - Core sound 1 with minor BC Triple EQ
Track 2 - Core sound 1 played one octave down (caused to also play slower) with Michael Norris Valve Warmer plugin
Track 3 - Core sound 2. Some BC Triple EQ and small auto pan with PanCake 2
Track 4 - Core sound 1 played down two notes (caused to also play slower) with some BC Triple EQ
Molot compression and a little ColourEQ (not often that I use EQ on the mix)

I started by playing two short loops of differing lengths against each other to see how they sounded phasing against each other. Then Paulstretch got involved and any trace of the original sample kind of got lost...

So three instances of the resulting tone had Bosomac Reaktor ensembles get medieval on their asses (Floodverb, Stellar and Artifact to break things up a little).

Maybe a little treble heavy so if that gives you jip (likely to trigger tinnitus etc) then be warned...
