    Hey all,
    Here is a nice generous snippet of a field recording I made in 2003. I basically walked around Broadmead shopping center in Bristol! Some nice, varied material here, a real feast - have fun!
    I'm looking forward to hearing what you come up with!

    The idea of the contest is to create ambient track using only one sample.


    Rules are:


    1. Additional samples, soundfonts, synths, samplers are NOT permitted (except instruments which will use only given contest sample loaded). Any other processing of contest sample is permitted.


    2. You can use as many copies of original sample as you want, each processed with respect to Rule 1.


    3. Time for submissions is 16 days, counted to midnight, UTC, of 16th day.


    4. Submissions should be uploaded to place available for all AO members. Links should be posted in thread dedicated to given round. Please, do not use hosting with countdown, CAPTCHA and other obstacles.


    5. Sample is provided under CC0 (public domain) license.


    6. Winner of contest is chosen by votes of AO members.


    7. Winner of contest chooses sample for next contest.


    8. Participants SHOULD disclose the formula for winning track for the benefit of community.

        I already have 3 project so don't think i'll have time to do it in 16 days but it's a cool idea and a really nice and useful sample.
        Let's say i find the time, no problem with granular sampler/synth or effect ?

          As long as the only sample used is from the challenges sample then it's all fine. Using part of the sample (even just a single cycle) in a synth that allows loading of samples is ok too as long as that's the only sound used, no mixing internal waves or sounds.

            Here we are Gentlemen, a genuine EVP recording (or is it?)

            My process was as follows:

            The original sample was time stretched and then duplicated.

            I ran the first instance through NI's Replika on the padphaser setting and Liquidsonics Reverberate.

            The second instance had Zynaptics Unfilter applied.

            A third short piece was put through my Dark Grains Reaktor ensemble (a simple grain cloud delay)

            And a fourth short section was reversed and delayed with Replika's Echo Canyon setting.

            Finally, all EQ'd and mastered using Izotope Ozone 6.

              Here's my entry.

              I put the piece through Audacity and stretched the tempo. I then made three copies: the first copy I put through the right speaker, the third through the left and the second pulsed between the two.

              I also took samples from the piece: the sound of a child saying "Mummy", traffic going past, people singing, and so on and using various treatments and filters (reverb, cabinet, tape delay simulator, flanges, feedback delay and so on) used these through out the piece.

                I normally get to work on one of these, editing, tweaking, adding bits and overlaying effects.

                This time I just fed the sample into ambient v.3 and improvised, trying not to overload the signal (which is very easy). So, it's a live jam.

                The only "production" is that I double-tracked the result with a 1/25 second delay to enhance the reverb a bit.

                  Wow at the sample and double wow at the entries so far. You guys are amazing!

                  Keep up the good work. I might have to find some time to do something with this one? Stay tuned... ;)

                    I can imagine creating the atmosphere of an old abandoned city where you hear the voices of the ghosts of past occupants and I'm trying to decide if I want to start out with something catastrophic like the destruction of said city.

                        Here's my contribution.

                        Using audacity, I speed and pitch changed the whole sample to 5% of original and then Ran the new sample through magnis smart electronix ambience to create a darker atmosphere.
                        I then took the original sample and paul stretched it by a factor of 10 then mixed those two samples together using sound forge cutting out the quieter sections and then took a third instance of the sample, pitch and speed changed it to 10% of the original value and then added reverb to that third track before mixing it with the first two.
                        To create the zomby like sounds or maybe demons walking around with chains, think of it as a demonic bob Cratchet wandering the city, but to create that audio illusion, I pitch changed and speed corrected the chanting segment from 1:45 to 2:55, and added ambience papen-long verb to give that section a dark and haunting feel.
                        Finally, I took various other short samples and scattered them throughout the mix just to add extra elements in some sections where a whole lot wasn't happening. My goal was to create a ded city with demons and ghosts wandering eternally so I hope it works.

                          i cut out 8 pieces and looped them in the sampler of renoise, some forward, some ping-pong (forward-backward).
                          then i added some delays, reverb, filters and lfos for panning and volume.
                          the idea was to have all that noises spinning around my head ...

                            These are great. Have only just seen this thread and not sure what time I will have to contribute-if any, however, am very much enjoying the results and descriptions of the processes. Nice work :D. Some really challenging and dark stuff in there too. I like that.

                              Here's my contribution: Broadmead Bliss

                              It is made of 4 tracks in Ableton Live.

                              Track 1 plays a pitch-shifted (I think it was 2 octaves down) and paulstretched (in Audacity) version of the sample (paulstretched by a factor of 1.5 and a time resolution of 2 seconds if I remember well). It goes into the following effects: Soundhack spectralgate, Valhalla Übermod, Auto Filter and Valhalla Vintage Verb.

                              Tracks 2-4 play different parts of other paulstretched versions of the sample in Ableton's sampler (For example the chanting part or different traffic noises).

                              Track 2 goes into Fabfilter ProQ2, Soundhack pitchsift and spiralstretch, Übermod.

                              Track 3 goes into MMultibandgranular, Soundhack spectralcompand and VVV.

                              Track 4 creates the main drone by going into NI Molekular, Melda MTremolo, VVV and Live's Auto Pan.


                              Timeline: Track 4 starts, then track 2 comes in at bar 25, then track 1 at bar 40 and and finally track 3 at bar 70.
                              There's some volume automation and on one paramater on a soundhack plugin.

                              It was great fun, but now I needed to get rid of it after working too long on it. Happy listening.
