  • ONE SAMPLE DARE 27

Dynamo - Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike. I know we have done this before. No FX were added. The vibrations from the fan cage created a nice spring reverb.

I think I'll use this round to see if I really can get to grips with Ableton Live or not...

Neat sample incidentally, lots of variety.

I switched to Live last round and I haven't looked back. Although quirky, it is made for what we are doing here.

That's my thinking too. I love Reaper and know it well enough to do everything I need but there are times I feel it's all a bit... bare bones and low level. Y'know? eg. Chopping samples up into the sampler seems long winded with loads of window swapping and re-focusing, multiple midi editors floating about etc. For the minimal stuff I do, I just want to click on a midi clip and have the editor there in the bottom panel. Or split a sample up and just drag the bits I want to a drum rack and not have to worry about nesting all the instances etc etc...

I quite like Studio One though too. ;)

Cool sounds. This may be the hardest anyone has worked - physically - to provide a sample :D

cool...id like to participate in this if i can (im going on vacation for a week), but i have a question regarding rule 1 (which im sure has been answered somewhere already).

the way i read it...it is acceptable to chop up the sample and load various pieces of it into psygen or similar grain synths...as long as i only use that sample...correct?

                      Yep.

I think we've even established it's ok to mess around with single waveforms from the sample, loading them into the oscillators of something like Dimension or Alchemy.

                          Lost In Space

inspired by the music of David Bowie:

                          https://soundcloud.com/ahornberg/lost-in-space

the 1st track is a deep noise. the pitch is defined by two cascaded bandpass-filters. they are tuned by ear.

for the 2nd track I used one of the crackles in the sample, pitched by a filterbank of 6 parallel bandpass-filters, tuned by ear too. a delay with a pitch-shifter in the feedback-loop is added and followed by a large reverb.

on the 3rd track I tried to create something that could be heard as a distorted human speech ... I tried this but I am not satisfied with the result you actually hear. it is made by using automation-lines to change the gain and the frequency of a filter over time.

the 4th track is made similar to the 3rd. here I added the reverb to the feedback-loop of a delay.

then you hear the 2nd track again, playing more random pitches.

the 5th track is tuned by ear and constructed similar to the 2nd track, except that a noisy part of the sample is used.

the whole thing is done entirely in Bitwig Studio using the built-in sampler, various filters, delays and a frequency-shifter.
for the reverb I choose Acon Verberate.

Here are my notes for this newest chalenge, original forum poast to be found at http://www.ambientonline.org/forum/s...SAMPLE-DARE-27&
track1: ran original track through smart electronix ambience and applied a ring modulator.
track2: speed and pitch changed track 2 by 2 and a half octives.
track3: time stretched track 2 by a factor of 20., took a short 3 minute section and added a stutter effect to it.
track4: took the strumming that begins at 00:02:16.054 to around 8 seconds later and ran that through a delay, then pitch shifted it 4 octaves down, added a preverb effect and then time stretched the results to create a low rumbly drone.
track5: took the strumming at 3:33, changed it's tempo and then the speed. this is very different from applying a speed and tempo change at the same time because you can apply different variables to each which results in the sound being altered more significantly than if both parameters were applied simultaneously.
track6: took the strumming beginning at 3:16 and gave it the treatment done for the previous track.
track7: took the strumming beginning at 3:16 and changed only the tempo and then added a phaser effect.
track8: mixed tracks 6 and 7 , added an additional phaser and pitch shifted the results down 2.5 octives.
