Image Inspired Dare #5

This is a part of the "Seahorse Valley" from the Mandelbrot set ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandelbrot_set



Rules:

1. There are no restrictions as to how the track is created. All sound sources and processing methods are allowed as long as you have the rights to use them (ie. no sampling of copyrighted tracks, use only samples and recordings you've created or have the rights to etc).

2. The image is only an inspiration, you do not have to use it to generate any sounds (in an application such as Metasynth)

3. Time for submissions is 16 days, counted to midnight, UTC, of 16th day.

4. Submissions should be uploaded to place available for all AO members. Links should be posted in thread dedicated to given round. Please, do not use hosting with countdown, CAPTCHA and other obstacles.

5. Winner of contest is chosen by votes cast by AO members.

6. Winner of contest chooses the image for next contest. Photos, digital artwork, pencil sketches... All acceptable. The image can be hosted at Ambient Online or on a site such as Imgur if you feel a high quality copy is preferable.

7. Participants are encouraged to discuss their methods for the benefit of the community.

funnily enough I've just been playing with a possible entry...

maybe it's a busy time (AO5 etc), I don't see any problem with letting this one go on for a bit longer if people are planning on entering..?

As much as I would love to, for some reason, I am just not moved to create sounds based on images.

I am moved by pictures, for sure, and I love Mandelbrot images, having messed with generating software myself over the years.

But, for some reason, there is a blockage in me old brain cells somewhere that doesn't allow me to connect images to music...

Okay, I'll jump in...

This was made by feeding an earlier track of mine into ambient v.03 and improvising on it (I do this a lot). The earlier track was https://soundcloud.com/tuonela-1/it-...is-in-the-shop, if anyone's interested. I then cut up the result and re-arrange sections, treating them with delay and other fx in Audacity, double and triple tracking them (often with changed pitch and phasing) and occasionally importing pieces from other tracks and works in progress and using them as drones and contrast tracks. It's a somewhat random and inexact process, but I like to think I know what I'm doing and occasionally the results are rewarding. This was a ten track mix.

I like to think that, in a simplistic fashion, the way I work with sound is similar to the concept of fractals - that in delving further and further into sound and stretching short sections into tracks, cutting them up and repeating the process, there is a similar result, even though the sound patterns may be less immediately similar than the visual ones. Or maybe I just need a good coffee. :confused:

Seahorse Valley

So here is my entry. I called it "Seahorse Valley".

I made this "live" entirely using the SuperCollider programming language.
That means, I made changes to the program code while it was running during a recording session.

This is how the code looked like after the recording (the initial state is lost forever):

Technical inside: I used only sine waves that phase-modulated each other in pairs and a lot of randomness.
No effects were added afterwards.
