  • One Sample Dare #36

Hello. First, thank you very much for the honor of being the winner of the last challenge. Here's my original sample for challenge 36.

Also, on another note, I seem to be having problems getting email notifications to replies to threads that I'm subscribed to so was wondering if there was a way to fix that? I hope you all have a happy new year and I'm looking forward to hearing your entries.

If it's Hotmail, Live or MSN etc, they've changed something and you have to delete it from your host (eg Outlook) and re-add it. I hope. I'm just trying to get mine working again...

Yeah, seems to be working now.

Here is my submission. Getting in early for a change.
Please note that I have deleted my old soundcloud account - soundcloud has been annoying me so much lately I spat the dummy.
I would like to avoid soundcloud altogether, but I also want to participate in the sample dare; they are fun to do. So I have a new SC account until I find an alternative. This account will be more than likely only be sample dare submissions.

Apologies to those who have commented and followed my soundcloud postings in the past.

Track 1: 3 seconds from the beginning - slowed down a lot and amplified a little. Lots of echo and reverb. Looped.
Track 2: 1.5 seconds bite from the falling glass. Slowed to 5 seconds. Lots of echo and reverb. Looped.
Track 3: Last 25 seconds slowed to 11 minutes 33 seconds. Cut and chopped with some sections slowed down even more. Fade in and fade out at various points. Reduced bass and volume, but increased treble. Cut down to 25 seconds, increased 2 octaves and looped.
Track 4: Left over T3a - reduced bass and increased treble. Changed up 1 octave. More reverb.

This was fun, so I might do another...just because.

                Dark Creatures

                so here is my entry

I put 3 snippets from the sample into Bitwig's sampler, tuned the sampler to a microtonal scale and improvised 3 times.
Then I added several delays and filters modulated by LFOs and a reverb.

Well, this turned out a long way from what was intended... a bit longer, too. :hmmm:

I seem to have used a similar approach to previous dares. I “improvised” twice on the whole sample, once using my limited demo copy of The Mangle and once using ambient v.3 – you can tell the difference, the first provides the rhythmic, industrial, often machine-gun like effects and the latter the more tonal, ambient sounds.

I cut some rhythmic bits out of the mangled version, cloned and multi-tracked them, adding vst effects in Audacity. These are often multi-tracked with silly amounts of delay and other effects.

I also created a couple of drones as underlying passages.

Hi there. Here's my submission, something very different from my usual tracks.

track 1: ran the entire sample through a delay.
track 2: pitch shifted track 1 down by four octives then ran it through a second delay then through smart electroniques ambience.
track 3: ran the original sample through a reverse bouncing ball delay with tone shift then pitch shifted it down by 4 octives then through smart electroniques ambience.
Track 4: Took a 1 minute section from track 3 and time stretched it by a factor of 15 then pitch shifted it down by an octive.
track 5: pitch shifted track 3 up by 28 half steps.
track 6: pitched track 5 up by 7 or 8 octives, preserving the duration and then lowering it again by 48 half steps not preserving the duration and then adding a heavy chorus effect.
track 7: mixed tracks 4 and 6, took the last 13 minutes and ran it through a frequency shifter effect then time stretched the first 12 seconds by a factor of 40.
After listening to all this, I decided to loop the breaking glass part a second time and then mix it over itself in both channels at different intervals to further add to the chaos.
After those loops were finished, I took the rest of the industrial ambience, ran it through a phaser effect to create the bleak wintery sound for the last half of the submission.
I hope you enjoy this one.

                      Hi,

As threatened I have made another submission :s

Paul stretched the whole sample x 10
Added huge amounts of echo and reverb
                      Passed through a highpass filter
Chose a 4 minute section from about a third of the way in
Added fadein and fade out to selected sections
Cut the thing into 4 pieces.
                      Mixed and mastered in Logic

                      Simple. Hope you like it.

I really don't know what is going on with soundcloud???
I tried to fix it but without success. I see it hasn't happened with anyone else. So weird.

Looks okay from here... I've had other problems with SC, but that could also relate to the age of my PC. And mine...

Here's my piece - Poor Reception.

                              - I try to be good about keeping track of how I get from A to Z on these pieces, but this one got away from me.
                              - There were many iterations of trial and error between Audacity, ambient_v3.0, Iris. One, two, or all three were used, generally in the order listed.
                              - There are 13 tracks. About half used Iris.
                              - I used a section of the sample from around the 41 second mark for a number of the tracks. There were a couple of fairly good ringing tones in there.
                              - The opening and closing radio type sounds were made by putting the original sample in ambient_v3 and changing the Filter on the fly.
                              - The closing 78rpm sound was used by taking the section of the sample around the 41 second mark, putting it in Iris and then playing a simple pattern of notes on the keyboard.
