  • Image Inspired Dare #13 [Dragonfly]

As I'm not a photographer, I've chosen this one from Flickr, by stomas, available under a CC Attribution license:

    9036452646_63b82d3d9f_o.jpg
    https://www.flickr.com/photos/stomas/9036452646/

I've chosen something very different from last time, which was quite industrial. This one has some beautiful fragility. I'm curious to see what you all come up with!

    The Rules:

    1. There are no restrictions as to how the track is created. All sound sources and processing methods are allowed as long as you have the rights to use them (ie. no sampling of copyrighted tracks, use only samples and recordings you've created or have the rights to etc).

    2. The image is only an inspiration, you do not have to use it to generate any sounds (in an application such as Metasynth)

    3. The challenge is open for one month. If you're a little late and the thread is still open then please post away or PM me (GaryG); this is a fun challenge and entries are more important than the deadline.

    4. Submissions should be uploaded to a place available for all AO members. Links should be posted in thread dedicated to the given round. Please, do not use hosting with countdown, CAPTCHA and other obstacles.

    5. Winner of contest is chosen by votes cast by AO members.

    6. Winner of contest chooses the image for next contest. Photos, digital artwork, pencil sketches... All acceptable. The image can be hosted at Ambient Online or on a site such as Imgur if you feel a high quality copy is preferable.

    7. Participants are encouraged to discuss their methods for the benefit of the community.

Entries should be submitted by midnight UTC on Saturday August 27th.

    Best of luck!

Note: entries that are released under an open license (I use CC-BY-SA myself) will be collected into an album that will be free to download on Bandcamp, just as magnesson did for #11.

Technically, I think that's a damselfly (slighter, with fully separated eyes), but fortunately this is art & not science.

I revisited a series of tracks I did inspired by the dragonfly (https://soundcloud.com/tuonela-1/set...-the-dragonfly for those interested) - ended up liking this more so I only used the title.

A track generated originally using a Luminth, fed back through a demo copy of The Mangle with more restraint than usual, then multi-tracked and treated with delay/reverb.

I've been imitated so well I've heard people copy my mistakes -- Jimi Hendrix

It may very well be; I have no idea. I'm just going by the title the photographer gave it.

          Either way, great resulting track!

            Bump :listening:

The deadline is coming up this weekend. I am working on something that I hope to finish on time. Is anyone one still meaning to submit a track?

Yes, it would be fine to have a bit more submissions.

Track 1 - Took a field recording of marsh ambience by Dobroide at http://www.freesound.org/people/dobroide/sounds/38297/ paulstretched by about 2 with harmonics+gauss/octave mixer/tonal/compression(may have been slight binaural beats in symmetric stereo mode too, I don't remember if I kept that). Ran it through bleach module in fscape. Added Protoverb and Sheppi Spatial Enhancer vst's in Reaper
Track 2 - used midi keyboard with Helm synth
added That Thing and Mhorse for final mix

sounds microtonal ... I think that comes from the birds in the field recording

My submission is quite a simple effort. It is made up of 5 tracks in total. Two field recordings, and 3 track each using the same 3 cords played on keyboard as arpeggios, but each track using a different soft synth and different filters. Various delays and reverb filters plus slowing down things, stretching, pitch and tempo changes and well as 'spreaders'. All work done in Logic Pro. The field recordings didn't have much processing either. One was slowed by 25% and nothing more while the other was slowed by 50% with delay, reverb and spreaders.
I deliberately kept it all simple and on the slow/quite side with just the tiniest bit of discord to represent the the slightly skittish/stop start/hovering nature of these gentle creatures. I also tried [by using lower frequencies and slightly irritating sounds] to show the perceived [by some] darker side of the dragonfly, mostly from name association and poor marketing from their collective publicity staff.

A minimalist effort. Four instances of Una Corda with added delays & reverbs.

My entry. I was initially going for something completely different, but it didn't pan out. So last night I had a new idea, and today I came up with this.

Sound sources are AudioThing Vinyl Strip (for the emulated vinyl dust crackle) and de la Mancha's Dirty Harry (for the buzz), the former processed with two instances of Frostbite, and all of them routed thru convolution reverb. Ideally I would spend more time polishing it, but it'll have to do.
