  • One Sample Dare #44

your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to make a coherent piece out of the following sample of a door creaking:

as always, should you or any of your fellow forum posters be caught using other samples, the administrators will disavow any knowledge of your cheating.

    this challenge will self-destruct in 5, 4, 3, 2...

if you decide to accept this challenge, you must follow the rules below:

the idea of the contest is to create ambient track using only one sample.

    rules are:

    1. additional samples, soundfonts, synths, samplers are not permitted (except instruments which will use only given contest sample loaded). any other processing of contest sample is permitted.

    2. you can use as many copies of original sample as you want, each processed with respect to rule 1.

    3. time for submissions is 16 days, counted to midnight, utc, of 16th day.

    4. submissions should be uploaded to place available for all ao members. links should be posted in thread dedicated to the given round. please, do not use hosting with countdown, captcha, and other obstacles.

    5. sample is provided under cc0 (public domain) license.

    6. winner of contest is chosen by votes of ao members.

    7. winner of contest chooses sample for next contest.

    8. participants should disclose the formula for winning track for the benefit of community.

    good luck!

Lovely sample! I hope I can find the time to do something with that. |

A small, irregular loop made more rhythmic with stretch markers in Reaper then dubbed up with HY-Reso filter and PSP CMDelay. Then another two choice bits of the sample stretched and suitably affected (DiversionFX, Valhalla Spacemodulater).

          No conventional reverb used. Shocking.
Latest release: never to be repeated

I 'improvised' on the sample using ambient v.3, triple tracked the result, added delay and reverb and a tweak at the end.

                  Four tracks.
I chose a very short section from the fade out part of the sample. I sped it up quite a bit, then made it into a loop.
For track 2, I used T1 and changed the tempo, then slowed it down. Used 4 different reverbs and 3 delays. Changed pitch and amplified.
Track 3 I used the whole sample and sped it up 400%. Then made it into a loop.
Track four was made by slowing down T2 even more and repeating the 4 reverbs and 3 delays.

My little frantic attempt - several times repeated sample, modified in Ableton effects on several lines.

Details: I used the WOK Stretcha plugin to stretch out the 33-seconds (or so) source file to various lengths with pitch modification and different attack/release characteristics. The shorter stretched files were then adjusted and looped to fit the time frame of the longest one. Some overall amplitude (envelope) adjustments were made to each component so they would cycle in and out of prominence. The third one I did sounded like voices, hence the title (I know this title is messing with standard Greek mythology but I think remixing history should be OK, too.)

No processing except for the above described volume adjustments were made to any of the clips used.

Okay... I've been reading some of the track descriptions and I really should come clean about my particular submission.

Having been caught out the last OSD, whereby I had not fully understood the workings of Adaptiverb and being perhaps a bit over keen to use my new toy, I have learned a lot, and I have tempered my view on the use of this effect.

In order to create my piece I added five instances of Iris 2 into my DAW and uploaded a copy of the supplied sample in each. Each Iris instance plays a certain part of the sample, each one to set to loop.

Each instance of Iris was then routed through a single instance of Adaptiverb, which I placed on its own bus.

As you can hear, the main "cat purr" fades up to a level an pretty much remains there for the duration of the piece.

The other instances are automated to come in and out of the mix over time.

I also added another three instances of Iris 2 which I use to play single shot sections of the sample. These were mainly sent to my usual reverb (Breverb 2) and delay (Timeless 2), with a send to Adaptiverb.

So, having decided last time to never use Adaptiverb again for this challenge, and having learned so much more about how the effect works, I am now happy yo use it.

I will leave it to others to decide whether or not we need to have further discussions about this effect and whether it should be banned, either now or in the future.

Is this still an active challenge?
I'd like to play with the audio.

                              Almost Peaceful

                              - This piece has seven tracks.
                              - Five of the tracks were made putting the sample in Iris 2 and creating the shorter 'noisy' notes.
                              - A sixth track was made the same way, but with a two note chord. That track was never used. I bounced one playing of the note and put it in ambient_v0.3. Two long variations of that were made with slightly different pitches. Those two variations became tracks 6 and 7. 6 is heard in the middle and 7 plays throughout.
                              - Various tracks had Pancake 2, Waves MixCentric, Logic Compressor, and EQ. For the sake of time I put Ozone 6 (without compressor) and MixCentric on the Mix Bus.
                              - All done in Logic Pro.
