"One Sample Dare" Contest

Hello everyone!

With blessing from our host, Dax IX, I would like to start contest for ambient creators.

The idea of the contest is to create ambient track using only one sample.

Rules are:

1. Additional samples, soundfonts, synths, samplers are NOT permitted (except instruments which will use only given contest sample loaded). Any other processing of contest sample is permitted.

2. You can use as many copies of original sample as you want, each processed with respect to Rule 1.

3. Time for submissions is 16 days, counted to midnight, UTC, of 16th day.

4. Submissions should be uploaded to place available for all AO members. Links should be posted in thread dedicated to given round. Please, do not use hosting with countdown, CAPTCHA and other obstacles.

5. Sample is provided under CC0 (public domain) license.

6. Winner of contest is chosen by votes of AO members.

7. Winner of contest chooses sample for next contest.

8. Participants SHOULD disclose the formula for winning track for the benefit of community.


I give example of such processing: My track "Hirimpiraght" is created from one sample, sound of bathroom reboiler.
I've used Ambitron, Paulstretch and Smartelectronix Ambience.

I use FreeSound, but SoundCloud or even internal AO file storage could be OK.

Ok, I use SC. Another question, how and where would judging take place? In this thread or a separate one? Also, would the judging only be for the best track or would there be first, second, third choices...etc?

Yes, judging is something we would need to work out.

I think the best thing is to have each round in its own thread, kinda like the KVR OSCs.

I think that separate threads for each round is preferable.
Also I suggest to have only one winner - who prepares/selects sample for next round.

It is better to start first contest tomorrow, after getting some feedback from other AO members.

My suggestions/quetsions in context of contest procedure:

* Tracks are submitted until April 3rd (two weeks for every new round?)
* AO mods create "poll" with all submitted tracks listed
* Every AO member has one vote to use with his favourite track in poll
* How much time we should give for collecting votes?
