  • My podcast - ep 2

I'm never quite sure this is the right place to post this, I'll leave it to the moderators to delete the post or move it or send some ninja assassins to kill me (this option would actually be the coolest, it'd look great in my biography)

Anyway, my second experiment in podcasting is out, and you can find it here http://macofbionight.bandcamp.com/tr...e-02-sept-2013

Should you have nothing better to do, have a listen

    Thanks

It's awesome! I listened to it. Happy to see that there was indeed more commentary this episode, more music, more everything!

Nice work my friend. You should release these on SoundCloud as well and expand your audience!

    Cheers,

I just listened to the podcast. Great one! I enjoyed the references to older works and I loved the story about the old man and his remembrances of his town. You made a very moving point in closing. Thanks for sharing!

Listened to this last night on the way home from work. Really enjoyed it, both the music you played (I particularly enjoyed your Kraftwerk tribute) and your chat. You made a very interesting point about 'happy' electronic music being so rare, it's something I've often wondered about myself. I'm usually an optimistic kind of guy, life's given me a few kicks in the ass but I'm still here and I know I'm not the only one that life's kicked in the ass, so I tend to focus on still being here more than the other things. But when I sit at the keyboard, noodling through some deep pad sounds, all this mournful stuff comes out...Sometimes my wife sticks her head around the door and asks me could I please play something a little more cheerful? And I had no idea it sounded so funereal! Don't get me wrong, sometimes(often!) I'll deliberately go for unsettling, scary atmospheres - but not sad, never sad. Is it something about the sounds themselves? Is it because I'm not very good at keys so I have to play slowly?

Your point about making conversation with strangers was also thought-provoking, backed up with a nice anecdote. A strange thing I've noticed here in Sheffield, which is quite a big city but we have lot of green areas too. In the city centre, you wouldn't dream of striking up a conversation with a stranger. But if you take a walk in the woods, everyone who passes by says 'hello' at least, maybe remarks on the weather or the scenery, sometimes strikes up a conversation for no reason apart from the fact that you're another human being who happens to be briefly sharing the same space...

Anyway, that's a long-winded way of saying I really enjoyed your podcast, and I'm looking forward to the next one

It's very strange... maybe it's because most people who are attracted to EM are fairly "deep," tend to look inside of themselves, while joy and cheerfulness usually come from the outside world. Maybe the trick is just to represent what we get from the outside, as opposed to just representing what we have inside.

I listened to your EP twice in a row, and I can assure you that it clearly transpires from your music. Beautiful!

Same attitude as I try to keep

I believe it's today's society that prevents people from being friendly. Our society is NOT friendly, it's based on selfishness, competition, aggression, and all those horrible things that result in constant and excessive self-defense. Your observation is very interesting and seems to corroborate this...

Thanks for taking the time out to make such a detailed reply and thanks also for the kind words about my EP. I set myself an ambitious target there - to make three tracks in the time I would normally take for one. Consequently I lived and breathed these tracks in forensic detail for about a month, and when I hear them now, all I hear are the component parts...so it's good to hear that the emotional connection is still there :D

Very often when one works for too long on an album, the original emotions - the "need" to express himself - disappear from the tracks and all that's left is some well-crafted works. If forcing yourself not to overwork them is what preserved the emotions, then it was a good idea - the emotions are definitely there

Thanks, that's worth knowing. It's very easy to fool yourself into thinking you're 'refining' when you're actually 'overworking'. On this occasion, time was a major constraint (self-imposed, but a constraint all the same) and I think that made me a little more decisive. It's funny, those tracks which I feel as if I've quickly 'thrown together' always turn out to be better than those which I've had to struggle with. Who says artists have to suffer?
