  • My latest EP

I’m new here, but thought I would post my latest EP. It’s titled, Electronic Light - Jon McMillan. Edit: added links to this post and removed from below.

    Bandcamp

    SoundCloud

Let me know what you think!

On a side note, I’m struggling with ambient music styles…a lot of what I hear is “slow tempo electronic” music, sometimes with a beat/percussion elements-but I see it labeled electronic, and sometimes it’s labeled ambient? Has there been a shift from ambient that is true sonic atmosphere with little chord structure or melody, to music that is called ambient, but had a simple beat and other rhythm/percussion elements?
Maybe my thinking is off, or there are just a lot of different sub types of ambient music!

    Anyway, thanks for the listens!

It is an ongoing problem here unfortunately: try using a third party service like Imgur, then get the BB Code share link and just post it in the body of your message

Ambient as a genre itself has become so broad--like the genre of rock and roll. So many things can be called it until it's almost meaningless. I don't worry too much on classifications, though it is useful to folks in ways to have an identifying label as well as to a newer artist trying to find their audience.

I loved the pieces, light airy and a sense of positivity in your compositions. The mix felt balanced well. The cover is well done and fits the work.

Unsolicited Advice (all of this is IMO):
It might also be useful to post your work at a site that facilitates casual listening. From the links your google link gave me the first three required several clicks to get to the music (not a problem for me, but some potential listeners won't go further than a direct link). The Shazam link brought me to youtube, which was ok, but no need to stop by shazam to get to youtube (plus youtube has ads). Most of other places in the google search required an account to listen and even then only gave a limited preview of the piece.

Just starting out as an artist, it would be best to provide the path of least resistance to potential listeners. Bandcamp is a wonderful platform for casual listening (full direct access without an account) and as a distribution point should listeners be inspired to grab a copy--all from a single link.

Right. What I was thinking was the case.

        Thank you so much!

Regarding the unsolicited advice, I had been thinking about a Bandcamp or a SoundCloud or both…I think I need a PayPal acccount to use Bandcamp. Don’t use PayPal so might go with a free SoundCloud.

I replaced the prior link with a link to the Jon McMillan - topic YouTube area for direct listening without having to have an Apple Music, Spotify, etc. account.

          the advice was good

I didn't bother listening to your music because I don't have accounts at any of the places your music is on and I don't like adverts

I think I need a PayPal account to use Bandcamp
you only need a PayPal account for Bandcamp if you want to sell your music

Yes, both soundcloud and bandcamp are great places. As Andy said, you will only need a paypal account to receive money. Both will take a cut, unfortunately. You could adjust prices to compensate for that.
