  • Thought Experiment's latest - Contemplation

    https://soundcloud.com/thought_experiment/contemplation-edit

For those of you who might have missed this on podcast#18 (shame on you :razz, here's a link to my latest track.

'Contemplation' will be track one on my forthcoming LP (working title: 'Journeys Within') which will be exploring different means of 'mind-expansion'.

For anyone who might be interested in this kind of thing:
the track is a mixture of Generative (the strings/pads were composed using Nodal) and Improvisation (the guitar part and bassline were each recorded in a single pass). The percussion was MicroTonic through Permut8 (hey seismic1 - looks like great minds think alike ;) ...and btw thanks for the comment on the 'cloud, most kind) and another layer of MicroTonic>Permut8>QuadFrohmage. I also chained all of the MicroTonic patterns together, and made one of the patterns an odd number of beats, so that the cycle repeat was less predictable, and never occurred on a bar line, making it a bit 'restless'.

The 'edit' in the title refers to the brutal removal of over 3 minutes of music to make it fit Podcast requirements ( only kidding, it just gets going a bit quicker and finishes off less gradually).

Hope you like - any and all comments will be most welcome

This is without doubt the most "out there" piece of music I've heard from you, Mike. When I listened to it on the podcast I was strongly reminded of that soft section on ProjeKct X "Heaven and Earth", not least because of the string synth type sounds, but also the delicate percussion. together, they really give this piece a delicate, dreamy, irresistable atmosphere.

I think I tried for a similar, but coarser-sounding and more upfront string synth effect on Mirror, using Pro-53 with some FX. Microtonic is a monster. I really ought to put it to more frequent use. I have some EnergyXT virtual automated routing tricks up my sleeve for a future piece with Microtonic/Turnado/Permut8. Heck, I could even add dBlue Glitch to that.

Anyway, Contemplation is a great piece of music. I'm looking forward to the weekend. I can route this out via the rDAC to the new amp. I am one of those weird people who likes to listen to ambient music.........LOUD :D

They can't touch you for it :D

Tim, thanks once again for taking the time to listen and comment in such detail. Yes I guess it is a bit 'out there' - I think I'm starting to stretch out a bit more, after doing three long-form pieces for the EP which turned out quite well (even though I say so myself). I'm glad you liked it, and I'll certainly take the ProjeKct X comparison any day - if my music is only half as interesting as theirs then I'm doing OK

The string synth/pad comprises of about six layers: Rapture plays an Orchestral preset from a Cinematic pack, Cypher plays a very grungy almost atonal pad, then there are about four instances of Zebra, mostly playing realistic string sounds. I'll admit tweaking the MIDI track for the Zebra strings too - I made it a little more legato, and accentuated the dynamics a bit.

I love MicroTonic - it's so versatile, right out of the box you can make banging techno, clanging industrial, or right at the other end of the scale, subtle, restless percussion that gives motion without propulsion to a track. I love the idea of 'growing your own' patterns in the Patternarium, and the automation is imaginatively implemented too. And then when you start to bring in effects - well, it's the most fun you can have with your trousers on :D I'm looking forward to hearing the results of your experiments with MicroTonic.

Thanks again for the kind words

You definitely won't regret it. Are you taking advantage of the 'retired by zebra' trade-in deal? (see link below)
