  • across the road - field recording

Hi, I was listening to the excellent metadronos piece http://soundcloud.com/metadronos/iccigyporre this morning and within the first few second it reminded me of an old piece of mine - so here it is

A field recording of a house being built across the road in 2006 or 2007. I recorded an hour every Tuesday morning (at about 10:00 am) for 28 weeks. Each week provides – I think – 20 secs of both background and individual spot sound. The background was developed by taking a representative sample from that week, taking the FFT randomising the phase, then taking the IFFT, to give a noise sample that represented the spectrum (but not the dynamical structure) of that week. This was then convolved with representative sound of whatever the activity of that week was.
Overlaid on top of that are spot sounds that seemed to me to represent the normal sounds of that week.
The density of the sounds is determined by a drawing the builder made of the activity cycle across the entire building period.

In one of my few live performances, I 'performed' this at this great venue in Melbourne, on a huge diffusion system - I deliberately made some of the more threatening sounds come from behind the audience so they had to turn uncomfortably in surprise when they blurted out. Some people found that annoying, but that was the point to some extent

a concerto for construction site & field recorder. the concept is amazing & the results - to me at least - are astonishingly musical! That venue btw looks absolutely gorgeous - from the way you describe the performance, the sound system must be quite impressive. cool stuff, thanks for sharing!
