  • The Lime Room "Sun Halo"

So I gave some fresh production to my 2013 piece 'Sun Halo'. Originally it was a mixture of me beatboxing and footsteps in a park (both recorded on my phone using SoundCloud recorder), piano chords, cello, and transposed windchimes. I used Fruity Squeeze on the beatbox percussion to give it some kind of bit-ruining, 8-bit, distorted fuzziness.

I was not happy with it, so I stripped it right back to just the piano, cello and chimes, and replaced the crappy recording of footsteps with some new, really crunchy footsteps of beautifully crisp-quality recorded on my new Zoom. Also applied my new EQ understandings to refresh the piano, brighten up the high notes and muffle the low-notes.

    Nice pieces.
May I ask, why did you opt for the Zoom? For sound quality reasons obviously, but what made you choose it over others and which others were in the same league?
    Cheers!

It was one of the few recommended to me on here, one of the other field recorders I had read reviews on stated that the build seemed cheap and kind of fell apart easily and had short battery life. This one seemed perfect. And I am impatient, I wanted one now, so I ordered it straight away without really checking any others. The reviews of the Zoom were great, though you have to order necessary parts (SD card, ACDC, windshield, USB) seperately. 20 hours of battery. Plus with the seperate "extras" pack comes a tripod, mic adaptor etc.

                Thanks guys.

Richy - multi high notes? Do you mean the cello strings? There is also no drone/pad. There is probably wind picked up when recording the crunchy walking and the people in the background.

I just wwent on your bandcamp site and the track we are getting here for the forum is the wrong one we are getting here your featured track Quartz rather than sun halo - loving the crunch and the hint of people sounds now that I am hearing the right track

I listened to a piano piece. With a slight set of drums playing in n out of the track. There is more than one track on your Selections - EP (Disk 2)

The piano piece played only piano from start to finish. Its duration is 2:53. The drone like effect or wind that I described comes in at 1:58 right after what sounds like drums. Also I said the drone like effect reminded me of the wind. That's just me using metaphors for what I hear.

But I did say remind not that it was. I do that a lot as a consideration for fellow musicians when reviewing their works as I don't want to offend, also its easier to as it can make the reviews a much more interesting prose feel.

I just assumed as soon as I hit play well that would be Sun Halo. Also there are no titles to your tracks so that would explain why I thought I was reviewing Sun Halo.

                    Cheers

Ah yes. I obviously embedded the whole EP. Grr.

Well thanks for listening guys. I know what you're all talking about now :P

Richy - I know what you mean by the drone thing now. It is merely a string. I am not offended, nor would I be offended by someone describing their experience. I appreciate you sharing your personal perception of it The tracks are titled, you were listening to Inertia.

Woggle - I am glad you like that little melody. It's a simple one, but I was quite proud of it. You were listening to Quartz.

Thanks again guys. And cheers for clarifying.
