I've experimented with dark ambient myself and I enjoyed it. I'm thinking I should give it another go, see if it gets me out of my current dry spell...

I do recommend seeking out more dark ambient. I've learned the genre can be really diverse.
Dry spells are the worst, the times when inspiration is lost takes the joy out of creating.
Been at dark ambient for about two years now myself. I still have much to learn on the production department.
Give dark ambient another go, experimentation is the way forward.
