have you looked at this software - it is designed for live playing / interaction. I own it but have never got around to really getting into it. There is a free version, incredibly powerful http://www.sensomusic.org/usine/

Lovely stuff. I don't think he's using a lot of his pedals there, sounded quite... clean? Except for the obvious delays and reverb. I need to finish my control box (just an arduino and a few pots etc) so I can play a bit more in this area (I find flicking between guitar and mouse a no no )

I've noticed that about guitarists - we're quite willing to kneel on the floor and twiddle knobs on various fx pedals (or raise them up by putting them on a table) but we don't want to flick a mouse about. I suspect twiddling knobs looks cooler - at least I hope so, I've done it myself often enough...:biggrin:

I genuinely find it easier with knobs; maybe less of a distraction, you can just grab a knob without really looking whereas you have a second or two delay as you reorientate yourself with the mouse pointer etc.

And, risking the wrath of guitar-heads everywhere, you don't really need a particularly expensive model either. As long as it's comfy and playable and has fairly quiet pickups then all the usual other considerations are pretty irrelevant. I guess a decent sustain is useful but even then if you're slapping on lots of reverb... I find a trem useful so probably best not to buy the cheapest strat copy you can find but I've found the beginners Yamaha pacificas (for example) have perfectly usable trems. As long as you're thinking subtle tonal wobbles as opposed to all out trem abuse.

I agree, the pacificas are actually pretty good - quite amazing for the money. But if you can go a secondhand G&L, mine is from 1987, they are a fantastic guitar and seem very undervalued eg http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-G-L-...-/141094631441

+1 I'd always recommend the Pacifica as a starter guitar, the quality rivals some guitars at twice the price. One thing to remember to include in your fx chain (right at the beginning), if you're using loooooong delays and cavernous reverbs, is a noise gate - you don't want unintentional handling noise repeating back at you for 30 seconds or more...of course the craftier player will thump his axe a couple more times and make it into a perfectly intentional rhythmic backdrop ;)

Well thanks for all the input you guys! I won't be getting one anytime soon, but it's definitely on my long term to do's. I will certainly take your advice into account
