  • Aphex Twin - Syro

I just got done listening to the new and long awaited (13 freakin years!) Aphex Twin album. I have to say, being a huge fan of Aphex since the 90's, I am disappointed. I mean, from what I heard it sounds like he's going back to his AFX roots on some levels, which is cool to hear but after a 13 year wait I was expecting something a bit more (something monumental like "Drukqs"..). However, there are some really catchy tunes on the album. My favorite is S950tx16wasr10_(Earth_Portal_Mix) (Track 11). From what it seems to be, RDJ looks like he's back and here to stay, so, who knows what he will bust out next.

So, what does everyone else think?

I haven't heard anything but the teaser track. But Chris Russell posted this cool graphic of Aphex Twin's gear list for Syro over at Relaxed Machinery:

Honestly, I think it would have been a great follow up to Drugadsdakjfhkashdfkjasdhfgqas (or however you spell it) if it had come out a decade ago, instead of after a decade's wait. It just sounds rooted in the past, and fuck there are way too many farty acid basslines. RDJ is a great sound designer, though-- those gently detuned pads and crispy percussion noises are a delight. Compositionally, though... I'm just not hearing it.

Couldn't agree with you more! This album should have came out in 2003 or something to that effect. It is a very enjoyable album but after a 13 year hiatus, I was expecting A LOT more. I still remain disappointed :/

Hmm. Maybe it's only my personal opinion but I've found new Thom Yorke solo album is very similar sound with Aphex and another great band - Boards of Canada. Maybe it's new trend

Hehe, I agree. Unfortunately, I don't think we will ever see a SAW III :(

I'm not very into what i've heard so far to be honest. My favorite album was always I Care Because You Do. I mean, what I heard on SC was well executed etc..but really i'd hoped for more innovation, and some kind of growth after that many years. I like one of the noisy tracks on SC, alot of it sounds too noodly for me. I also noted a dislike for the somewhat spazzy sounding basslines.

EDIT: FYI my friend mentioned that the Richrud D. Jomes SC account might be fake? Any truth to this or is he thinking of something else?
