Has anyone here ever heard of the music group Coil? They created some very bizarre and beautiful music, which may or may not be considered ambient by some. I feel a personal connection with the group, because their singer, John Balance, came from Mansfield, as do I. With the ten year anniversary of Balance's death only a month away, I have decided to attempt to make a track in tribute, in the Coil style. Hope that goes well.

They are rather obscure and a lot of their work is out of print, so unfortunately the best place to hear their music is on Youtube. I've put links to a few of my favourite tracks on here.

They may be relatively obscure in mainstream terms but I'm pretty sure everyone into dark ambient or old school Industrial (think Throbbing Gristle not Ministry...) would know them (they bloody well should ;)) Massively influential I'd say.

'Musick to Play in the Dark' is pretty good, as is their original Hellraiser soundtrack imo.
Latest release: never to be repeated

COIL. Yes. Brilliant, all of it, from first note to last. They had a quote on a t-shirt or somewhere that read, "when you listen to COIL, do you think about music?" Good stuff. Ended way too early, and in a dark harmony with the universe, just as you'd expect from them.

Anyone into ambient should be well aquatinted with Coil.

Never saw them live. Always wanted to, but the stars never aligned.

I'm quite shy about posting but a COIL thread will bring me out of hiding every time! I have a lot of respect for their unique approach to sound, regard for fans and their longevity. Favorite releases would have to be "Black Light District" and the whole "Equinox" series. Such unpredictable artists.

Glad to see we've got some discussion going. Just remembered that I forgot to post my favourite track: The Somnambulist in the Ambulance!

                Still developing my tribute track.

Well, the day has come. On this day, ten years ago, John Balance sadly died when he fell off his house, marking the official end of Coil.
I think we should all "pay our respects".
My special tribute track is now completed, but I will link that in the appropriate forum thread as per the rules.

Heard of Coil? I practically worshiped them in the 90's. Still one of my favorite groups ever, RIP Jhon...

I hadn't heard any Coil before now. I like the poetic quality and that background harmony on "where are you." Good stuff. "Dark corona."
                        It's all an illusion.
