he may be well known to many here, but I had a pleasant shock in discovering the Germany-based Schiller's ambient/space works.
He started as DJ and still makes predominantly 'animated' albeit quite melodic and often epic-sounding electronic music, but saw that on some of his albums there are additional discs that contain very atmospheric ambiental works - some are new material, some are extremely spacey re-workings of some of his tracks.
If you look for his stuff, then the "Einlassmusik" vol. 1..8 I think (or even more by now) are quite interesting experience.
