  • Terry Riley - In C (2009 remastered Carnegie Hall concert from 1968)

Many of you will have listened to this before - after all it was performed & recorded almost five decades ago! If you have never heard this, I recommend you listen. With this composition, Terry Riley changed music in the 20th Century. This is the first recording of this piece. The first performance of In C was given by Steve Reich, Jon Gibson, Pauline Oliveros, and Morton Subotnick at the San Francisco Tape Music Center in 1964.
I recently got the CD release of this remastered recording and, at the first listen, had to immediately play it through again. It struck me that deeply.

Hmmm... Says that the video is not available. Could it be a country restriction?

While I am listening to this, and reading a description of the piece, I'm wondering if we could start the largest ambientonline collaboration to create our own version of this piece.

I'm a bit disappointed in myself that I haven't even heard of "In C." Even more so because most of my work is based in C Major

          Sheet music is freely available:-

I had pretty much the same thought about doing an Ambient Online members version of the piece. We would need to start by seeing how many people would be interested. Then we can work out the mechanics of it. I'd certainly be in for it!

Rereading my post, I didn't make it very clear that the first performance (by the highly pedigreed individuals) was not recorded. The piece would not be recorded until four years later when performed in Carnegie Hall by Terry Riley on saxophone and Center of Creative and Performing Arts (SUNY-Buffalo). This is that recording.

Yeah, it would need one brave volunteer to mix the final though LOL!

I've just finished listening to that video I posted. There are a few microphone farts here and there, but not so much that the experience was spoiled.

Also, looking at the notes in the sheet music, part 53 is supposed to be arrived at by everyone, eventually, and make a few crescendo/diminuendo, but either I missed that or they didn't bother. Might have to listen again once I am familiar with the parts...

I think this is the best performance and video of "In C"

Perhaps I am biased as Nils Frahm is a hero of mine.

I read it too fast; it's clear enough...
