Hi everyone,
i'm a guy named crystal, or crys. been making ambient stuff for almost as long as i've been making music which is since 1981. i started out with bass guitar and fx doing rock rythms with feedback- influenced by Velvet Underground, Dead Space jams, Eno, and Cluster (and about a thousand other things). i was in a duo called 60 CYCLE HUM doing space noise/industrial/jazz/ambient for 11 years. we had a few other guys playing percussion and traps. i was fortunate to have NYC radio to listen to, esp WFMU and also WNYC, WKCR, WBGO, etc. i started building analog synths in 1986. i started using computers to generate and record sound in 2002. Reaktor and Reason were my first two programs. i still use Reaktor in additions to loads of other software like Tassman, Absynth, Omnisphere, Stylus RMX, Alchemy, String Studio, FM8, Iris, Chromophone, Audition, Reaper, AbletonLive,......plus my analog synths, theremin, monotrons, and gizmos and gadgets galore.
i don't like the genre-ification of music so much but for what it's worth i also do psychedelik, 'downtempo', industrial, noise, improv, and a lot of unclassifiable stuff. also i've been playing as part of an electronic music improv trio called SpaceBrane.
in addition to sound some of my other major life interests are perfumery, gemology, electronics, and reading non-fiction.
cosmic cheers,
crystal
