  • A rabbitsquirrel in Providence

Hello! I just discovered AO through a post on SoundCloud, and came here to explore. I was excited to see a large number of familiar names from people I was already following on SC, along with many, many new artists that I am having fun exploring! It's nice to find a place for the conversation, since SC very much has the sound at the forefront (which realistically is a good thing...).

I have experimented with creating music for over 15 years, often creating work that was focused on atmosphere and experimentation, in addition to playing the drums. I have recently focused my energies on a creating a more "unified" body of work (not to say that it doesn't vary widely), and sharing it publically. This is rabbitsquirrel. While some of what I create is structured/more traditionally arranged, the majority is ambient to drone, and overall on the darker/noisier side. I also really enjoy creating what I call "Microdrones", which are 1 minute long drone pieces (not every drone has to be 8+ minutes!). My influences/musical taste are extremely varied, but a lot of it leans on the more experimental/odd end of the spectrum.

On the equipment/process side, I am primarily digitally based, using/misusing whatever software I come across. For structured pieces, recently I have been using Ignite, which I have a great deal of fun with. For most of my work, I create initial sounds, and then manipulate them into unrecognizable submission. I use the Figure app occasionally, but mostly I use a reverse spectrogram software to transform images into sound, and do pure wave building, combining sine, square, and sawtooth waves, along with pure whitenoise.

So if any of that sounds intriguing, check out some of my sounds, and I look forward to getting to know the community!

Welcome to AO. I'm listening to your drones from your other post now - you'll fit right in here! I like your concept of the micro-drone. Be sure to check out the AO Challenges forum if you've got time - I'm interested to see what you could with the sample for challenge #2!

Thanks! The AO Challenge is actually what first brought me here (I heard Utu Lautturi's entry in my SC stream and investigated). It looks like a lot of fun, and I definitely want to make a submission (and I have a thing for Truvan throat singing as well!)

            Hello and welcome!

I checked your works and they are very interesting - including track titles.
Concept of microdrone is very interesting, too. You inspired me to build library
of short presynthesized drones (I work a lot with pregenerated WAV/FLAC files).

Thanks! I am glad you find my drones interesting, and I must admit, naming the tracks in one of my favorite steps in the process.
I'm also glad that you like the microdrone concept. I have been thinking about starting a SC group focused on short (under 90 second) drone and ambient work, because i think there is something interesting about creating an atmosphere in such a short amount of time.

Please, start here with thread dedicated to short drone forms. I think it fits "Member releases" section

You could start "One Minute Dare" contest, as well - challenges inspire creativity ;)

Agreed. Maybe I have a short attention span but I find creating 'traditional length ambient pieces' (discuss... ) a chore, after three or four minutes I've had enough. Much rather focus on sounds and atmospheres. I think Morgan Fishers 'Miniatures' album was a big influence for me too, fifty-odd one minute tracks by various people (gavin bryars, xtc, residents, john peel...)

Thanks! While I do enjoy making longer pieces as well, there is something refreshing about short, to the point pieces. It seems like there is interest in this, so I may propose either a short ambient or "One Minute Dare" thread (though feel kind of silly starting something like that having here such a short time!)
