  • New Album by Imi Fal

This is the third album by Swedish ambient artist Imi Fal. With sparse soundscapes and beautiful melodies it goes searching for the stillness within us. This is music for daydreamers, with lightly treading pianos, occasional whispering strings mixed with the noises of the world.

"An incredibly beautiful and very tasty slice of ambient pie from one of my favourite Swedish composers, Ingemar Holmlid (aka Imi Fal)." Myristica (Mei-Ling Grey), musician, UK

"Outstanding. A real pearl." Moisés Daniel, Mangalyan Records, France

"This reflective and melancholic piece is one of the true beauties to be encountered on Soundcloud. Deserves to be in a guilded frame. Simple yet so enriching as it reaches out to an inner place. Lovely." Neil William Holland, writer, UK

Imi Fal is a solo project by Ingemar Holmlid (Sweden), started in 2011. His first album was an independent release in April 2013. Signed to Record Union by A&R Pär Berglund the same year. A second album was released on Record Union in December 2013. The song "Drizzle + Sand" appeared on Ambient Online Vol 3 in September 2014, and in December 2014 the album "The Lightest Touch" was released, both digitally and as a limited edition cd.

Nice album, i'm listening it on Bandcamp. Favorite tracks : Sonder and First of the last. I like the little touch of vocal. Great job.

Thank you! And thanks for commenting on Soundcloud. Yes, I also like the vocals of those tracks. For some reason i haven't used it for my latest songs - I think I will have to try singing a bit again.

I prefer not to sing myself. I like it here cos' it's part of the music, not a singer on the track. Well placed in the mix.
BTW vocals are a great basis for granular....IMHO

I have processed the vocals quite heavily (despite being a vocalist originally…) but I haven't tried to put them through granular. Sounds like a good experiment. And yes, I agree, the strength here is that the voice is just another instrument, and that's how I try to work with it. Technically it's really in the borderland of recording, sampling, stretching, vocal modeling, pitch-shifting, heavy processing - though I tried to not make the treatment too obvious. But I find it a very rewarding way of working - and you don't even have to sing very well : )

Not a place for a technical discussion but i'm always happy to share new ideas.
I use Granulator (Max device in Live) or The Mangle, followed by some effects.
Filter, delay, saturator and reverb, in different combinations, following my needs.
Work also nicely with a sampler like Sampler or Kontakt.

Anyway, that's not the point here, i listened to your album this afternoon with more attention.
It's nearly christmas so i put it in my wishlist. I hope my wife or my children will make some shopping there. ;)

That's how I use my voice, as an instrument that blends in with all the other sounds, not on top of or in front of the other sounds, if that makes sense. I love the use of vocal in ambient music

I've listened to the album through a couple of times and I really like it I especially like the way you apply gentle processing to the piano...it blends with the other sounds so well that way.

@Sky High Diamonds: That sounds interesting. I didn't notice last time I listened to your songs on SC - I will have to make a new visit.

@Windspace: Thank you so much! I'm very happy to hear that. I used to never process my pianos, to keep them as clean and crisp as possible. But I realized what a treasure of different sounds there are available using only a piano (and that's why you will hear the sound of the hammers in some tracks too). Compression and heavy-handed eq goes a long way, but running the piano through all sorts of lo-fi simulations can be quite remarkable. Interesting that you find them blending so well - didn't occur to me until you mentioned it.

Perhaps I should say that is what I am trying to achieve rather than actually achieving it! I think it's apparent in at least 2 of those SC tracks.
                    great album imi

Sorry, didn't mean to question your ability : ) What I meant was that I didn't realize you were singing in the track I listened to. Well, I do now! And I think you definitely succeeded in working with the vocals more as an instrument, especially in latest track. And the over all instrumentation is very good.

@alias9593: I'm also using Live, but as I'm still on 8 I haven't got around to try Max. Is it worth investigating? The Mangle looks intriguing. I will have to check it out. And thanks for considering my album as a christmas gift - I really appreciate it.

I didn't think you were questioning my ability so no worries and it's really useful to have some feedback from you, really encouraging. Thank you for your comments on my SC too
