It's probably safe to assume that a lot of us didn't start out as ambient musicians so what are your musical backgrounds and if possible can you let us hear some? You probably know that i started out as a drummer/backing vocalist in a death metal band and after that i wrote a lot of acoustic based material which i am reworking for future release. So, who's next?

I can let you listen to a few snippets from when I was about 16 - it was my first - er - "album," entirely made with toys, non-instruments and a plastic electric organ and recorded on audiocassettes... these are just very short fragments from a few of the tracks on the album.
Very embarrassing, but here we go:

It contained a few ideas I'd like to develop some day, though.

It was a lot of fun, even if I dreamed of electronic reverb units... Some day I want to make an album using solely all those things again.

I had a couple of PFM albums long, long ago, seem to remember they were pretty good.
I guess in the early 80s, uk schools were still quite 'segregated' musically (metalheads, punks, soulboys...) My friends were all into metal though I was never a massive fan so drifted towards prog... Got bored with it (80s prog just one step away from AOR...) but still drift back occasionally.
Anyway, I started listening to John Peels show religiously and that opened me up to pretty much anything. Particularly liked the 'lofi' guitar bands of the time (sonic youth, pavement, polvo etc) so my first real musical dabblings were a cheap strat copy straight into a four track with the drum sounds of a cheap keyboard providing rhythm. Not pretty. Not sure I have any surviving recordings but may post if I can find them...

Sounds good from the first ten minutes or so, I'll dirpy it and give it a proper listen over the weekend, thanks!
