  • What's in a name?

I'm thinking that I need a new name for my musical works. "Zombie Slugs Music" doesn't really sound very ambient-y, and "Woolyloach" isn't any better (although I'm sticking wih it for my nickname).

So now I have to think of something (a) appropriate and (b) not already thought of. Nowhere near as esay as it sounds!

    Time for some research...!

"Synthetic Aurality"? Nobody has it.. no Website for it.. I wonder if I can change my Soundcloud name, or if I'm stuck.. urgh.

Ha, I made up my own mind! Creepy, that. "Synthetic Aurality" is going to be the name of my ambient music operation!

Just registered the domain, next to change my SoundCloud user name, and tonight come up with some kind of a logo image.

DEFINITELY more ambient-y than zombie slugs!

Whew! "Under Construction" page up, Soundcloud now "Synthetic Aurality". This breaks all the links I've posted outside Soundcloud, so I may bet a few irritated PMs from folks for a bit, but.. I like this MUCH better.

Much to do, still, much to do.

What did the Slug signify? A mollusc or a silver bullet, or neither?

There used to be a member on KVR called Slug (37,2). If I remember correctly, Slug was also an ambient artist.

Nice. At one point I had a couple different aliases for various styles of music, but then just went back to KrisM because it was easier to keep track of. There's definitely a feeling of satisfaction when you find a name that no one else is using, though.

Btw, I had to force myself to stop reading your name as Woolly Roach lol

Since I mostly do just ambientyish (that's a word and nobody can tell me it isn't! >.>) stuff, now, I've recently started using the moniker Dream Error for it. I feel that with my penchant for glitchy sounds, it fits rather nicely. I have a Soundcloud profile for Dream Error, but haven't used it for anything yet, but as I start to build up my songs again from a devastatingly stupid hard drive format, that will change

Originally I was going to try to worm (heh) my way into dong soundtrack work and Foley for local film, video, and broadcast.. but it turned out that it would have been a HUGE investment and not something I could successfully pull off without quitting my day job.. which I can't afford to do (meh). "Zombie Slugs Music" came about based on a late-night online chat session with a bunch of crazed musicians! Would have worked fine for game music as well..

..but since I've gone deeper and deeper into ambient/electronic/experimental/soundscape compositi9on and performance, it just didn't fit any more. Sol change had to come, and now is a good time for it.

I've been called WoolyRoach before, so youd not be the first! I'd probably even answer to it (lol)!

Dream Error - great name! But ARGHARGH about the hard drive format!! I hope you recover from it quickly!

Thanks on both. I've recreated a couple, and some of the others were also recreations from when I used Jeskola Buzz anyway, and I still have those files (and there are apps to pull a song-length MIDI track from the Buzz song if I want to use my current plugins), so it's only a matter of time
                Meh.

Glad you found the name you like.

Would be good to hear what, why or how others chose their names.

Seren Ffordd is welsh - literally star road - but being a poetic language it can carry the sense of 'way of stars' - which is a name for the milky way in some older cultures. I've always loved staring at the stars so it just felt right and also carries a feeling of deep space and/or mystery....

names can also be fun - in the mid 80's I lived with the name Hastings 1066 - changed by deed poll....came back to my birth name after 5 years.

Hastings 1066 is a beauty! maybe Hastings 10666 for black metal
I've used lots of names over the years, going back to the late 70s, but have mainly just my actual name for quite a while now in music anyway. I'm struggliing with trying to come up with a business name at the moment - need the software name and the url to match, which is almost impossible nowadays - there's so many people squatting on names.

That's a handsome-looking webpage Wooly (I must admit I'm struggling a bit with my website, nothing seems to work the way I'd expect it to...I thought WordPress was supposed to be easy :steam: )

Your new project looks real interesting, too. I'd definitely go for the 'planned' approach because it works for me - keeps me from wandering off on tangents, and strangely enough it also stops me from over-thinking which can be paralyzing. Umm, you can hear me blethering on at some length about this on my Podcast Interview :o

Thanks! (blush) it's mainly Blogger with some background and color customization, along with some Photoshopped 3rd party backgrounds I've purchased to use as starting points for album art. I was going to do it all in HTML5 on my own, but.. honestly.. I want to focus on making music and not being a Web designer.

As to Wordpress.. I had a Wordpress site once. A complete pain in the rear to customize and I had a fancy book on how to do it! If you really know HTML and Javascript you'd probably be OK.. but I don't! And I don't know PHP at all.. le sigh.

I've pretty much settled on the 'planned' approach for the reasons you said. Back when I was a wannabe writer (SO long a story there), if I tried to just Sit Down And Write(tm) I'd freeze up.. or get 10-20 pages in and fade out. I started outlining, and things improved dramatically.. so I expect the same when I compose/perform music.

I'll have to chase your podcast interview down! I've been working my way through them one at a time, over the past couple of weeks - it's really great to actually HEAR the folks that make the music!

Just don't pick a common noun which is both ungoogleable and has been used by a few artists. *rolls eyes at self*

Well I'm glad it's not just me that's struggled with WordPress...I do know a little Javascript and HTML (I've built a couple of webpages for work but they're purely functional, not pretty at all), but like yourself, whatever free time I have, I want to devote to making music, not Web design. I had all kinds of big ideas of writing articles, reviews on the site...guess I'll have to make the best of it for now...
