  • Art and Video for Music Releases

I'm interested in finding a better way to produce artwork for album covers, releases, online presentation, etc. I would also like to learn more about creating videos (i.e., youtube, etc.) for my music. I currently create slide shows and convert to video, but I would like to move towards time-lapse or video clips. Do any of you work with other artists (graphic designers, video editors, etc.) to get good results? Any recommendations?

Also, I noticed that stock video is fairly expensive and often comes in very short durations. Anyone know where to find longer clips of landscapes, nature, or aerial video? Of coarse, maybe this is why it is best to work with someone who does this job.

    Thanks

There are several approaches you can take to get what you're looking for. Stock footage is indeed pretty darn expensive for any reasonably long clips, and long clips are not easy to come by.

I've looked into this myself, and being an amateur 3D animator I've tried using software to generate flybys and alien landscapes. The cheapest way to go would be to get Bryce from DAZ for US $20: http://www.daz3d.com/bryce-7-pro/ but be aware there's a serious learning curve, and you need a fairly powerful computer to do anything meaningful. But it's absolutely fantastic for flybys, and the price for the power is hard to beat.

For quicker results, if you don't mind very abstract visuals, would be to create video via a program like HitFilm or Particle Illusion, then edit it together in a video editing program like Sony Vegas Studio or Magix Movie Edit Pro. This is not a cheap path, though!

Then there's the option of buying a cheap point-and-shoot camera that records video, just wander the streets and parks with it, then bring it into a video editor and surreal-ize it with effects. Since I have an old (never upgraded) copy of After Effects 7, I've been experimenting with this approach.

Cheapest but most difficult: Blender, a 3D modeling/rendering application, is very powerful, free, but has a massive learning curve. You could use Blenders fluids and particle systems to create all kinds of abstract visuals, ut it doesn't lend itself to working well with landscapes.

While not the greatest of graphic artists, I offer up my limited skill set to whomever needs a cover for an album. I work using Adobe's CS5.5, and draw upon my knowledge from a rarely used degree I earned about 12 years ago in computer graphics/commercial art. I just love designing covers. I do these at no cost for anyone who needs one, or if you feel so inclined; a small donation to the Ambient Online website would be cool too.

A selection of my work can be found here (several of these pre-date my schooling, so they are a little less refined): aoVI-ontol on deviantART

I may take you up on that someday.. I'd gladly chuck a donation at AO in exchange for album art! My visual art skills are limited to Photoshopping pre-made purchased backgrounds into odd looking things.. I'm very much not a visual arts guy..
