  • With respect to using a limiter in producing ambient music: I always put a brickwall limiter at -0.5dB on my master track, just to protect my ears and speakers. Sometimes experiments get out of hand, and Reaper's automute kicks in at pretty high levels (tho knowing Reaper, that is probably configurable). Since I do make some noisy music sometimes, or have stuff with high dynamic range, I do find myself reaching for that limiter or a compressor on individual tracks to temper the peaks a bit.

This week I am having a hard drive failure. My main storage drive for music, samples, and Kontakt libraries is giving SMART errors, and certain areas are practically inaccessible. Some of the contents, including my own project files, are backed up. Other things aren't, and would take a long time to re-download. I'm trying now to save as much as possible (after buying and installing a new hard drive), before going thru the arduous task of locating and download things that are unrecoverable. It is a pain in the ass, just when I have a week of holidays that I wanted to use for making more music, or at least getting more familiar with the Kontakt libraries and plugins I recently acquired. Anyway, it's nothing disastrous; just a pain in the ass.

On the other hand, I was thinking about how I spend my free time. I recently picked up reading novels again. I used to be an avid reader, but find myself too easily distracted in recent years, due to all the entertainment and social media that the internet offers us. So I've made a resolution that I set time apart for reading novels, and sometimes non-fiction books, in the evenings. I also want to focus more on things that make me happy (and possibly others). I've found myself recently more involved in online discussions on politics and social justice. And while these are important subjects, my armchair activism is getting me upset too often, and unlikely to have as much effect as to make it worth that sacrifice.

So, once more I want to consciously cut out what is mostly distraction or negativity, and re-focus on what is important to me, and more likely to result in something positive: making music. I just set up a new twitter account (@ablauten) where I exclusively follow artists (mostly ambient musicians, some photographers) and where I will focus on sharing sound art (and some visual art) with whoever wants to follow me. I plan to refocus my Facebook activity as well, but limit my time there. I also want to streamline my process of making music, to make it easier to be creative even when I am tired from a day at work.

I am often in a similar place, and have recently begun to ask myself from time to time” how will buying this or doing this, improve my social relations? “

      • Currently sat on deck 7 of Armorique, up front watching the English Channel. Weather is okay though not sunny... Crossing is calm...calm

I can see I have much to catch up on. Internet is available on board but is poor.

I will wait until I can get sat in front of my laptop before responding to topics and personal messages. I am not a big fan of typing lots of stuff on a mobile phone keyboard.

        Till then...

          • Listening to Ambi103 ... it's good!

Also wondering how to better promote my first ever live app in the Google Play Store [warning: blatant plug approaching!] ... If anybody is interested and you're into a little bit of retro arcade gaming, please check out Funk Invaders - a space invaders clone with extra twiddly bits.

All the code, graphics, sound effects, and music were single handedly created by me and the project took a little over a year to complete (on and off). It was a massive learning curve for me but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Think I just enjoy the creative process whether it is for something like this or for making music which is, of course, my other passion.

Many thanks in advance if you choose to take a look at the game.

            Gavin

            • I don't see where it is in violation of any community standard to promote your creative work, music or otherwise, in a reasonable, non-spammy fashion.

                    • I've also had a quick listen to Ambi103 but I also wanted to catch up with stuff in the Member Releases forum, which I have been doing for an hour or so now.

Time for bed, now, so I am going to see how I get on streaming Ambi103 from my mobile phone.

The small amount I did hear was all music... Any plans to add some talky stuff, I wonder...

This looks like the perfect excuse to procrastinate a couple more weeks from here.

Today I'm evading flu shots, knowing I'll have to start giving in to them one of these years soon.

                          • Listening to an interpretation of Erik Satie's Gnossienne 1 and getting ideas and inspiration. At 3+hrs long I figure it can count as ambient more than classical, wondering how well a drone or some mildly glitchy and quiet background noise would work with it. Thinking I'll try something similar with some of Beethoven's shorter pieces, Fur Elise styled more like Arvo Part's Fur Alina. Or maybe Chopin(ambient waltz?).

                            • I'm playing around with NewFangled Audio's Equivocate. This 26-band EQ is very powerful and seems to be intended as a mastering unit. It could also be very useful as a mixing/tracking EQ for those awkward, resonant sounds which require taming at mix time, as it offers an exceptional amount of configurabuility, and is capable of offering some great "frequency sweep" FX via automation of the centre frequencies. It might hit your CPU quite hard if used on many individual instruments via send FX, but I don't think that is the intended usage. I like it.

I'll probably download the trial version of Elevate later this weekend.

                              • I ended up loading the Gnossiene piano sample in Reaper, playing around a bit and within a half hour I was getting sounds I really liked. So spending my day on minor adjustments to it. Hopefully get the full track uploaded sometime later today, without too many distractions.
