  • I'm on holiday for two days, my plan had been to just record some more music, however my neighbour has had an oil leak and my house is so full of kerosene fumes I've had to move out... I have a feeling this will turn into a major clusterfuck :/

Oh man, that completely sucks.. I hope it all works out with a minimal amount of pain... :frown:

      • Drinking lots of coffee.. accomplished nothing over the weekend but laying around taking care of myself. Running spreadsheets to see how soon I can move back out on my own, the longer I stay where I am the more I can put in savings but the closer I get to knifing my house-mates. :fence:Maybe the end of April at the latest...

Cast comes of next week, then it's on to the next thing (whatever that may be)!

          • Thanks. Fingers crossed I can just let my insurance company and next door's fight it out, but I suspect we'll have to find somewhere else to live, 400l of oil has leaked into the ground between our houses.

              • @iainx:
That's a terrible circumstance. I hope it resolves quickly and the contaminated soil can be excavated and removed ASAP. With insurance #%*>%}|%#'s involved though...is there an authority that can hasten the cleanup? Of course, that might put your neighbor in more of a bind than you want...if you're friendly with them!

I can relate a little. The standby generator that we inherited when we bought this place last year leaked gasoline into the soil immediately outside the house where it was stored. Only about 3 gallons leaked, but it filled the house with fumes. You've got 30 times as much to deal with. My sincere sympathies for your predicament!

                • Considering what it would take to make a career change from software engineer to writer/musician.

After 35+ years of programming computers, I'm starting to get sick of it. his bout of GODIHATEPROGRAMMINGSOMCUICOULDPUKE-it is is more subtle than the last attack.. my brain just flat-out refuses to jump on th problem and I find myself off studying film scoring and/or character development (uh-oh). It's not completely disabling but it feels more permanent, and reminds me of what's happened to a lot of my older friends in Silicon Valley - a creeping ennui. Most of theose folks now work as brewers, or vintners, or pursuing some artistic goal.. omg.. that could be me in a few years! :uh:

Writing, and music, won't make me rich. But can it keep me in beer and a small room somewhere? Oddly enough, as I get older my wans and needs seem to simplify instead of grow more complex, which is good financially as a Ferrari and a high-maintenance girlfriend would cut into my patch and sample library money (lol)!

Other people have pulled this off.. there must be a way!! One that likely requires lots of.. :workingout:

I have all the tools I need to be a professional writer, so the only expense there is my time.

For music, I suspect I should byte the bullet (lol) and see about learning to REALLY score for film, TV, and games. I own Garritan Personal Orchestra 4, $50 will get me version 5 and that should be enough to start learning with. Later, maybe one of the smaller Project SAM libraries... :cantlook:

Hope I don't have to move to L.A. or New York... :dunno:

Heh, heh. What hasn't ben done to death already, and by better engineers? It's a good idea but the VST market is flooded with developers both small and large, and I really don't have any audio-processing idea that hasn't been covered by Native Instruments or Audio Damage...!

Mabe making 3D porn and soundtracks for pornos.. pay is so-so but the work is steady..

                      • Ok, lap desk ordered.. now to choose: upgrade Garritan to V5, or get Shevannai?

Decisions, decisions.. whichever one I skip I have to wait 2 weeks for.. ugh.. :cantlook:

-- And, simple as that, Shevannai comes home! The Garritan site doesn't take Paypal and I don't have a credit card, so no sale.. Best Service takes Paypal, so it was a simple choice (d'oh). If I want better orchestral timbres I'll fork over for the Project SAM essentials, it's under $400US so it has to wait to see how serious I get.

                        • After a week of living in my parents/in-laws I've now moved to a hotel for a week. Blah, even less chance to do anything musical. Not having a guitar around me for the week has made me realise just how often I pick it up while I'll sitting around. Anyway, I've decided to spend this time learning/refreshing my electronics knowledge, cos I've had some ideas for guitar pedals to build so maybe something interesting will come out of this time.

                            • Deciding which membership level to buy in he Austin Film Society. In oder to work on soundtracks, you need films.. I figure I can offer film sound services for free, including doing some Foley as I own volumes 1-5 of the Sony Motion Pictures sound library. Might have to buy the other half.. ouch.. Top Ramen again!

                              • Currently Im trying to finish tracks for the Ambient collab release. Working titles are, the end of everything and Ordnung. Also im trying to recreate an old electronic track created on a friends labtop 5 years ago. A good friend of mine agreed to do some vocals, so im looking forward to that. Im also trying to get better at mixing so I study and study:-)
Regards, Dan Stanley of imogen projekt.
