Can't argue with Life of Brian, definitely one of the greats.
I've a soft spot for all the classics I guess (some like it hot, odd couple, young frankenstein, ladykillers...)
Was a big fan of Steve Martins earlier stuff (Man with Two Brains, The Jerk etc)
I guess nowadays I prefer stuff with a darker edge, not straight 'comedy'. Maybe something like the Coen Brothers (Big Lebowski, Barton Fink etc), Chuck and Buck, Being John Malkovich, Happiness... Wes Andersons films are pretty funny in that affected way of his, Royal Tenenbaums was great.
So, did you want just one film?
Ok, recently, laughed like a drain at Gentlemen Broncos. From the Napolean Dynamite guy, actually quite an awkward watch but if you're into scifi at all (particularly pulp scifi novels) then a must see.

I grew up on Python and Mel Brooks films. Life of Brian is one of my all-time favorites. I enjoyed a lot of comedy from the UK. Back in the mid-late 80's MYV rebroadcast the Young Ones. I watched them over and over.
Very sad to hear of Rik Mayall's passing last year.

So you can have a dark side?
