  • been gone a little while....

    so yeah....

i havent been around here in a while.

i experienced a major loss of data on my computer and one of my vst folders got shredded, along with a bunch of projects i was working on. i was so upset that i didnt even start trying to put it back together for like 2 weeks...and it took me another couple of weeks to get it back to where i can actually work on music.

i have to say though...i was on a little bit of a roll before that...and now...im just not feeling it. im super pissed i lost those projects, and its affecting me working on new stuff, and i was avoiding forums about music. (kvr doesnt count...its not about music :razz

    i know i know...its temporary...everything will be just fine. its just 1s and 0s.

    still...

That happened to me once, in a totally different context, but I know how you feel.

In my situation I tried shipping a bunch of clay sculptures I had made across the US from Maine back to California. This was about 15 years ago. I had someone help me pack each one, meticulously.

When they all arrived in California not one had survived. Most of them were crushed beyond recognition. It's like they were dropped from 2 stories. I couldn't believe it.

When I called the woman who helped me pack them to tell her the bad news she was so upset. She knew how great these sculptures were.

My response was my lesson learned, "At least I still have my hands."

You'll rebuild, it just takes time.

          ugh...thats way worse.

thnx everyone for the kind words.

the worst part is that like 2 days before it happened i was thinking to myself that i had better go out and get a new hdd because i hadnt been able to make a proper backup in a while (no room).

lol...maybe i sensed some impending doom or maybe i jinxed myself.

well a new 3tb drive is in there now.

Yeh that's happened to me before a few times. But what I always make sure of now is I have my projects backed up on usb sticks. They are a great invention and have been a life saver for me many times. I would recommend it. Buy a usb stick or flash drive and put all your projects on them. Then just put the usb stick somewhere safe and your projects will always be there when you need them :tu:

lol, yeah, it wasnt the actual project files...mainly the problem is that i lost a bunch of custom sample maps that i wont be able to recreate exactly how they were. when i made them i was just taking random samples and throwing them together in the map, so ill never remember which samples were on which keys. they were all full and there were like 8 of them. so thats 1016 samples that would all need to be exactly in the right spot in the right map...and i wasnt even paying attention when i made them, i dont even know which samples i was actually using in the projects.

              merp derp.

its ok, i have my new hdd and ill make a fresh backup image every week.

since people are sharing work loss, here's one that still bugs me to this day:

Back in the 80's-early 90's I recorded on a cassette 4 track. Once I had filled the tape, I was careful to remove the record safe tabs as not to record over them. Over the years, I began to build up a fair collection of higher-end cassettes.

My room mate in the early 90's loved to make mix tapes (of other music than mine). One day I had discovered he had recorded over several of my master tapes. He claimed it was an accident, but he had to put cellophane tape over the record safe holes in order to use them--hardly accidental.

He was a movie buff and had a large collection of VHS. Somehow a few weeks later several of his prized movies accidentally got Gilligan's Island reruns at crucial scenes.

LOL, how true. But I feel for you, I've lost some projects here and there over the years.

I remember those 4 track days all too well. Damn Tascams, haha...
