  • FALLOUT 4 - Ambient in Gaming

Is anyone else here pumped for the release of FALLOUT 4? One of the (many) things that sets this series apart from other games is the excellent ambient music soundtrack. It ranges from peaceful to industrial to outright sinister - whatever the mood, the music is very immersive. So many games are focused on non-stop action and mayhem - and that's cool - but FALLOUT encourages slow play and exploration. The concept of roaming an open wasteland just begs for ambient and the whole experience is quite hypnotic. :listening:

Any other ambient soundtracks or moments in gaming that you are fond of?

I'm not really a gamer but the Fallout games do look intriguing, as you say, the wandering around aspect, appeals to me.

As for other soundtracks, still love the Machinarium one though not strictly ambient.
Latest release: never to be repeated

Sound design in games is one of my favorite aspects of the medium. Makes you wonder what we're doing slaving at our day jobs when we could be making eerie soundtracks or lush space pads for sci-fi open world epics? Serious! :gaming:

Also wondering if these highly paid sound designers are fans of ambient music because they certainly make stuff that sounds like it. Collectively and individually we have the talent here to impress any game studio...if only they knew we were here. Bring it on hollywood!

      Cheers,
      -S1gns

Edit: I've been playing it in my spare time...and it is amazing. :hypnotized:

I loved Trent Reznor's work on Quake and Call of Duty. He also does great movie soundtracks.

In reply to the OP, I can't wait for fallout 4 ! it looks amazing, I still waste so much time, even now, wandering round the wastelands in fallout new vegas ! Bring it on !

I also love Trent Reznors soundtrack to quake, aoVI, as you also say his movie work with Atticus Ross is also great, my personal favourite is Gone Girl, amazing soundtrack.
Please feel free to check out my music - thank you

speaking of the fallout 4 soundtrack....here is the original wasteland soundtrack from 1988, and the wasteland 2 soundtrack from last year.

for anyone who might not know...1988s wasteland was the direct inspiration for the entire fallout series. fallout came into being as a result of the developers failure to secure the rights to wasteland, so they made their own game from scratch. i loved the original game, which i played on an apple iie back when it came out. wasteland 2 which only came out last year is a great sequel. both games are available on steam.

            enjoy!

I've been enjoying Fallout4 for the last two weeks and yeah, the ambient soundtrack is great. Really helps with the atmosphere.

I find a great comfort in some of the World of Warcraft zone music--especially from the home zone and city of our people and guild, Mulgore / Thunder Bluff.

While it is only ambient in the fact that it is the music that plays while you are in the zone, it is surprising what an effect it has on me when listening.

Of course I have been hearing it since 2006.

With Fallout 4 I had same sort of vibe and shivers as Skyrim's ambiance. It's a bit shame that Jeremy Soule didn't work with this game. His work with Skyrim was phenomenal in my opinion and Skyrim's soundtrack is one of best soundtracks in my book. But Inon Zur made very different and original piece of work in Fallout 4 and I think its very fitting. Too bad the soundtrack didn't have same kind of atmosphere track on its own as in Skyrim's soundtrack did.

Spent an hour last night tramping around some strange psyche-neon landscape in Psychic Cat, bizarre but intriguing. Also had a really good, ambient/drone soundtrack, fitted perfectly with the general unease of the game.

I've gotten to the point in the game where I'm basically one step away from ending the main quest. However, I know how Bethesda games work...you can do ANYTHING else besides that decision, the game world will not change and life will continue to exist as normal.

I'll probably continue doing side quests, tying up loose ends for another couple months...at least until the new DLC comes out. ;)

The music from obscure PC adventure game Schizm has been a big influence in my conceptual music. The game has some screen-smashingly difficult puzzles, but the graphics are amazing for its time (2001).

Also, a game from my childhood:

I've been playing Farcry 4 (since I finished Fallout 4, before Uncharted 4 comes out) ... and I've found its distorted guitar-esque drone music during the pause screen really nice.
